It is my opinion that you need to look at the overall cost to all of us when you evaluate something like this. In fact, I would argue that by paying an artificially low price for gasoline, you and I are helping to put more ridiculous monster SUVs on the roads. If the price of gas more accurately included the costs of road maintenance, environmental clean-up, maintaining a massive military to protect our global energy interests, etc, then the amount of money we individually paid towards these costs would be more directly impacted by the choices we EACH make about what to drive, where to drive, etc.

Right now, the person who carpools, or uses our pathetic public transportation system, or makes other decisions to reduce his fuel usage pays basically the same amount in federal, state, and local income taxes towards the costs I've outlined above as the person who drives their Hummer 100 miles round trip to work everyday, by themselves. To me, at least, that doesn't seem fair. I am not saying I want more taxes, just that existing taxes and costs be more accurately tied to the things that make them necessary.

Just my opinion, and another way of looking at the issue.

A good evaluation and logically done. However, we are not married to logic in "our world."

I'd hate for the U.S. to begin driving my choice of cars by taking larger chunks of my hard-earned cash. For me, it's a trade-off. I pay school taxes, but my daughter never went to public school and my son is in a private school, therefore, I'll say, it's fair.

I just have this fear that everyone in the country will eventually be driving Fiat Pandas and trying to modify them to figure out how to make them use LESS gasoline.

ok. how about a enclosed cabin pedal bicycle that has seats and pedals for 10 people? we can bikepool ourselves to work.

I want the pretty laguna blue color and I want the one with pretty pictures that tell thousands of words. I have a problem...I can't read. Pictures > Words. Also being a child of the motion pictures era, I would also accept the pretty laguna blue DVD boxed set or the VHS set.

I hope, by the time prices get THAT high, I can afford a rickshaw and someone to pull it.
