Power Light

A funny thing happened last night going home from work. I was in the '92 SVX. I had just gotten out of stop and go traffic and was heading up the local road to the ramp for the expressway. I accelerated up to about 40-45 mph from about 20 mph and the power light came on for about 5 seconds. It was steady and did not blink. I did not accelerate that fast . I was in '3' not 'D' at the time. That never happened before. It's weird.
Once I got on the expressway, I accelerated up to speed as I normally do and the car behaved as it normally does. Has anyone ever experienced this ?

The car is fine this morning.....go figure. The SVX has enough quirks to keep automotive savants happy for a lifetime.

It's possible to double tap the gas and engage power mode without ever mashing it. Perhaps you did this without realising it? I have played around with it and have engaged power mode at partial throttle. It will stay engaged until you let off the gas.

How's everyone been lately? Haven't been on the board in some time since I took on a second job (16 hour work days suck) and was surprised at how much has changed as usual when I am away for a few weeks.

never had that happen to me before. Whats the theory by having it in 3? Does it help acceleration or somehting?

being in '3' keeps you from shifting into 4th, until you hit a certain speed. some people do it in normal driving so the tranny doesnt do as much work. the same goes for the other numbers, 2 and 1.

i have experimented with these settings, and it is possible to rev the engine higher than if it were in drive, but its a good way to burn tranny fluid. i believe the manual states at what speed the gears will shift, because if you leave it in '1', you can eventually hit 4th on massive acceleration.

something else: if i find myself short of braking room, shifting to 3, 2, or 1 will dramatically reduce your speed. my friends call it stick-o-matic shifting. i call it downshifting.
its even possible to omit braking completely if you have enough space and swap into neutral. remember high revs = heat.
personally i shift into 2 at 20mph, and 1 at 10mph.

side note: another side effect of the 'ebay chip'. ever since installation shifting into 3 puts it in neutral, unless i hit the gas, then it pops back in. if anyone can diagnose this as a different problem please do. my gears arent showing any problems otherwise.

Automatic XT6's had same problem , malfunctioning power gear / lights. After some time and wear. I believe when I had 'The Shop' diagnose it , Joe said something to the effect of , it carries the fluids in the pumps ( torque convertor. ) and builds up pressure , and once it starts to roll , it releases it all in a big icky detergent mess and causes it. It's not a real 'problem' though..I dind't trust him , As it was Nick's car , I had to make sure so I took it to suby dealer , Boy that was a mistake. "We'll have to drop the tranny to make sure everything is in order"..."Ahh hell naw , gimme my fugin keys , I'm out."

BT Thomas,

I keep it in '3' around town and put in in 'D' around 55-60 mph expressway driving. When I first got my first SVX about 6-7 years ago; this was discussed on the defunct KC site and Yahoo SVX Club site. The therory was that the revs in the tranny would be higher, forcing the pump to push more fluid thru thereby keeping the tranny slightly cooler. I don't know if it actually works. I just started doing it and it just became a habit. I've also gotten used to the way driving around town in '3' feels. I think it gives more control.
