Damn, damn, damn. where are the 4.10s?

I went to pull the tranny out of my newly aquired RX tonight but I first pulled the rearend tag and 3.fing70 gears, they were suppost to be 4.10s. Does anyone know where to find a 4.10 ring and pinion for a EA82 AWD tranny? I need a nice tight LSD rearend to go with it.

As for the RX, I just pulled the front axles, locked the center diff, and did a big smokey posi burnout for a miniute strait.

I found Adelaide jap a long time ago, I was going to get a WRX motor for my Legacy but now I want a 2.5L stroker turbo motor for it.

The tranny i'm looking for is for the old style Loyal tranny, they have a differnt pinion shaft that gos into the center diff. I was told by a reliable source that all RX's had 4.10 gears but I guess he was wrong.

How did you lock the center diff? I need to do some dyno tuning, is ther an easy way to lock the center diff on an 03 tranny? Or is the EA82 tranny different, knowing my luck....I was told the only way was to weld the center diff off
thanks

The EA82 trannys came with a lockable center diff as they were always more off road worthy than the EJ20 series. Yes XT6's had locking center diffs too but no duelrange.

The XT6 uses the same tranny and runs 3.90's in it, I think that's about as low as you'll find without really searching the junk yards...I've accually got a spare XT6 5-speed and rear diff....but I want to keep them for spars for my XT6

So you havn't seen the 4:10s in any EA82 full time trannys?

My Loyal has 3.90s in it but I want to use the 3.70 first through fifth with 4.10 finals in an AWD duelrange with locking diff. I had the 3.70s and was hoping the RX would have the 4.10 finals I needed. If I can't find a 4.10 ring and pinion I'll just use the 3.90s but I would really like to get as low a gear as possible.

I don't know about the dual range tranny, but the 5-speed AWD in my XT6 is pretty much the same as the Legacy 5-speed tranny except the bell housing...so the ring and pinion will probably interchange, and the rear diffs are the same too.

Ya thats what I thought too untill I took them apart. The EA82 seires tranny have a different center diff (obviously it locks) than the EJ22 series. I have a good 4.10 ring and pinion out of an EJ22 tranny that I was going to use but in the L series tranny the pinion gos in to the center diff like 4inchs and the Legacy ones don't. There has to be an L series AWD with 4.10s somewhere, if not I'll just use the 3.70 tranny for now, I can always run it around in low range with the diff unlocked.

I thought only the automatics from those years used the 4.10 final drive? Or was it a 4.11?

The manual Impreza RS used 4.11(111111...), dunno if that's a doable swap for you, you'd have to find a front diff that would swap in, the rears are all interchangeable pretty much as far as the ring and pinion are concerned.

Diff numbers are a fun exercise in mathematics...

The final drive of the stock SVX is listed as 3.54, but is actually 3.5454545454545454 and on into infinity. The 3.90 gears are actually just 3.90. It's an interesting mathematical problem if you decide to use a reduction center diff like the '02+ WRX, it's 3.90 in the front, 1.1:1 in the center, and 3.54545454 in the rear. Makes me want to do the pee-pee dance.

Hmmm, if thats true, I may have to settle with 3.90s, assuming Auto and Manual pinions are different? It would be sweet if I could get some 4.44s but I know thoes never came in a Loyal.

And I think I was coufused, Subaru uses 4.11 don't they? My bad the title of the thread should read Where are the 4.11s?

Like I said in my first post, I know you can use the 3.90's out of the XT6 5-speed, Well pretty sure, as I haven't seen the inside of the dual range tranny, but doubt they'd be different as they were available at the same time.

Yes I could and might have to as it seems 3.90s and 3.70s were the poplar gearing for L series trannys.

I have now taken apart :
1Legacy FWD tranny
1 Legacy AWD w/4.11s
1 Loyal duel range 4WD w/3.90s
1 Loyal AWD w/difflock, w/3.70s
and soon an RX duel range AWD w/difflock, w/3.70s

So if you have any questions about the innerworkings of these trannys I can give you some ideas.
