oil leaks
um... i took my svx to the shop like a week ago... and they told me that there are some minor oil leaks... that are 'common on the subarus' i asked them what the leaks were and they told me that they'll have to pull the engine out and put some dye on it to find out.... are there common svx leaks?? just want to find out before i shell out money to get it done....

Uh... you have to run the engine with the dye in it for it to work.
The common leaks for Subies are the front crank seal and cam seals, followed by the valve covers. None of those require engine removal. You could have a rear crank seal leak, but it's not very common on Subaru. Whatever you decide to have done (and where - from what you've stated that would be my concern) make sure you have the PCV valve replaced. It reduces crankcase pressure that could cause leaks.

It depends on what you mean by analysis. If you have a driveability problem we charge an hour, as long as no dismantling is required. If you want an estimate for oil leaks, etc. we usually only charge if the customer declines repairs, maybe a half hour to an hour, again providing no dismantling is required.
Regarding oil leaks, it would be best for you to call a few shops in your area for competitive estimates.
