odd vibration at speed...

I know this is a lame question to ask because its so vague and no one is supposed to even drive at the speeds I'm going to mention, but here goes... My SVX develops a vibration at 90+ mph. The vibration is not in the steering wheel. It feels more like the entire car is vibrating. The vibration increases in intensity with speed, but if I let off on the gas pedal, the vibration stops. Up at 110+ mph, it starts getting fairly strong. And the intensity varies with how much I have the throttle pressed. If I press the throttle to the floor, that can stop the vibration, but when I return the throttle to the original position, the vibration returns. Has anyone else had this happen with their SVX?

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. :-)

WELL THERE IS ALWAYS THE POSSIBILITY OF IT BEING THE DRIVESHAFT, BUT THERE IS THE CHANCE IT IS THE SAME THING THAT WAS WRONG WITH MY '92 LSL. MINE STARTED SHAKING AT ABOUT 60 MPH. AFTER MY RING AND PINION CHEWED EACH OTHER TO PIECES AND I INSPECTED IT, IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEARINGS FOR THE DIFFERENTIAL. TO CHECK IT(I STILL RECOMMEND A PROFESSIONAL OPINION) CLIMB UNDER THE CAR AND WIGGLE THE END OF THE CV AT THE TRANNY. LOTS OF PLAY.... PARK IT!!!!

Significant Technical Input
Don't get all wigged out when you see play where the axles attach to the transmission, Subarus are always a little sloppy there. A lot sloppy is a different story. Best to have someone familiar with Subarus take a peek.

Oh wow my car vribates and shakes a little bit around 65 MPH too. Comes from the left front wheel only though. Steering wheel shakes too. Many people told me if I get the tires rotated that may take care of the problem. I hope its that and nothing else

It could also be worn out CV joints on your halfshafts. Same way or checking. Grab ahold and try to wiggle them up and down. Lots of wiggle at the cv joint means a short trip to breakage.
Rear d'shaft could be out of balance, rotors could be warped a little bit, tires are out of balance/under inflated, out of round or the rims are tweaked. Struts are wearing out, allowing slight wheel hop when no power is applied. Lastly, check your ball joints on the knuckle and the tierods. Checking thoes is the ol' grab and wiggle meathod. Lift a tire off the ground by jacking the car up *only one tire at a time..* and try to move it left to right, up and down, tward your and away from you. There should be NO play when you do this. If there is, then somthings worn out and needs to be replaced.

These are just about all the causes of the good'ol death wobble.

YES! Defantly check the Ball Joints!!!!!
Unknown to me, my SVX was in a wreak way before i got it
and caused alot of strain on the front end... Heres an example
of what happends when your ball joint goes out:

Also.. if its your ball joint, any time you hit a decent size bump..
it will sound like a small hammer hitting the bottom side of your car on metal. I wasnt told this untill AFTER my passenger side ball joint Failed WHILE i was driving.

Soon after, the driver side started knocking, and RIGHT THEN
took it to the shop, and they said my driver side ball joint was about to seperate like the passenger side did

but the ball joint is $45 from Subaru... and it was only 1 hour labor.

Hopefully you find your problem soon! Any damage to an SVX
is just ungodly... SVX's look too damn sexy to be damaged!
(svx-sexual here I guess LOL)

what does the angle on your driveshaft look like? try playing with some differnt shimming sizes under the cv and also the transmission xmember itself. Like i said before it took me a long time to get all of the vibrations out of my SVX, weird ones you never would have thought would be driveshaft related but sure enough were.
phil

good luck!

Holy Sh...Crap Thank gawd your entire knuckle didnt exit the car. Be shure to look at your halfshaft after that. These shafts are held together by only a thin little jesus clip. I think the shaft and your strut were the only things keeping your tire from taking off w/o you. Bolth could still be damaged.
ya know, just an fyi thing.
