How do I remove key barrel or ignition switch assembly ?

Still trying to solve the problem of key jammed in ignition.

I have a spare ignition switch, so would like to swap out either the key barrel or the whole switch assembly.

But I don't know how to do either.

Apparently the method for removing the key barrel is to set key to ACC position, press the release lever and pull on the key. I've removed most of the steering column covers but cannot find a release lever of any sort.
Suggestions ?

Other option is to remove the entire ignition switch assembly.
But it's held in place by two bolts that have no means of turning them (see attached photo). The one bolt that I do have was loose inside a steering column cover on my parts car, so I assume it vibrated out over time.
Any suggestions for removing these two headless bolts ?

Thank you

Re: How do I remove key barrel or ignition switch assembly ?

I managed to remove the ignition switch from my parts car (the impossible to remove bolts had already vibrated loose).

I've had a play with it, took some photos and thought I'd share my learnings today.

It's a 60MB PDF file that can be downloaded from here : http://goo.gl/QvhIWD
Currently version 1.0 of the doc is posted.
As I learn more I will update it.

the screws are designed to shear off after installation, best bet, use a screw extractor

Re: How do I remove key barrel or ignition switch assembly ?

I called an automotive locksmith today because I'd run out of ideas.
Didn't want to risk further damage by putting a screw extractor in my incompetent hands.

Locksmith removed the yellow interlock module from the side of the ignition switch (without removing the ignition switch off the steering column).
This allowed the barrel to be removed.
After much fiddling he suspects my quite well worn key may have caused the whole thing to jam up. He cut a new key to the original code and reassembled everything.
All works ok now.
Just need to clear the ECU to check that code 12 goes away.
