Starts funny

This has happened to the 1994 I have now and the 1992 I had, so I am thinking this is common .
I go to start the car if it turns over 5 or 6 times and starts no problem like 99.9 % of the times ,but only once now and maybe 4 times with the 92 the car does not catch and the car sounds flooded . Hold it to the floor and crank it for about 10 seconds and it starts. Just like the old carb cars. Just wondering if this happens to anyone else?
Any theory on why?

Re: Starts funny

that's how it starts, becoming more frequent or eventually going away all together. not saying that it's surely an injector but it sounds exactly like when the bottom well plugs leak on a quadrajet, intermittently floods the car out.

Re: Starts funny

Now people are telling me to spend 100's of dollars. For no reason. If your car stalled once would you replace the fuel pump? I got accused of making guesses. I will wait until I have more trouble than one miss start out of 600. Normally it will start in less than 3sec..I had this happen to my 92 10 years ago when it had 30,000 miles on it.

I get impotent starts on some days more than others.

I start my car something like 15-20 times a day. Based on what else I know and how it's been running and how it ran when it had issues that I had corrected, I would say it is either an injector problem or my fuel pressure is erratic.

Re: Starts funny

I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't seem to be hurting anything. Odd things just happen sometimes with older cars.

Re: Starts funny

My teal SVX, which it must be said has been extremely reliable but not always an enthusiastic starter, did the same thing shortly after I bought it in 2003. Seemed to happen mostly at around 32 degrees ambient temp. Crank all day, no dice. Hold the foot-feed to the floor and she'd fire right up. Replacing the coolant temperature sensor did the trick. Simple, and $20 +/- from any auto parts place. I'd try that first.

Re: Starts funny

i didn't say you should replace the injectors. i just said it sounded like one might be leaking, causing your intermittent rich starting.

Re: Starts funny

It shouldn't hurt to run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through it...

Mine is EXACTLY the same. It doesn't seem to like it when the temperature is around freezing point though not always. I think I'll buy that coolant temperature sensor AND some injector cleaner!

Re: Starts funny

If in fact was one injector how would I know witch one to change. Short of pulling the plugs and then I don't know if they would tell the story, since it runs and idles so good. Pulling out the clutch slightly before take off I can have it idle below 500 RPM close to 300

Re: Starts funny

it's hard to tell which one, if any, are leaking without taking off the fuel rail or pulling all the plugs when it acts up. if you know someone with the ability to current ramp the injectors you can usually tell which one it is without taking anything apart. trying a can of injector clean is probably a better use of time/money.

Re: Starts funny

That acting up is like oops it don't pop in 3sec.hold to floor 5sec. Later it fires. So we are saying tow it some place and have it checked. I think I will let it ride. I can live with it for sure. After hearing problems some are having I can live with this, slight incontinence . It started up instantly after sitting in the parking lot all day at 15deg. Temp. is not an issue . I thik it is pilot error.
