crank pulley and pin
sooooooo
lots of pretty lights on the dash / no power steering... hmmm let me pull over and take a look oooh look, both my belts are off - thats odd... well let me just... oh hi! my crank pulley is loose - nice turns out the pin broke and took the crank pulley with it - needless to say, i need both a pulley and a crank pin to secure it which of you wonderful gentlemen know where i can go about finding one? the pulley seems to be a lot easier to find ... the pin, not so much |

The technical name for it is a woodruff key- if you can't find one that works at the local parts store, it's only about $2 from the stealership. Make sure the keyway for it is not wrecked though, as it does happen.

and if the keyway is wrecked that means a new crank right?
cause in that case... im gonna get a new car... but thanks, now that i know the name im a lot more dangerous... |

We had good luck with hitting the end of the crank with spot welds to build it back up and then grind the keyway back out when I worked for Subaru (this is unfortunately an all too common problem) but you have to find someone willing to do it. Your average dealership probably won't, but your average independent garage probably will.

ugh, the keyway isnt too bad but the woodruff is wrecked... the belt pulley is toast and needs to be replaced
please tell me the actual timing pulley doesnt have to come off for this! i went in there once and really [really] dont feel like pulling all that off just to drop in this little key from what it looks like on the outside the woodruff secures both the timing pulley and the belt pulley... am i correct? |

You want the bad news ? I believe it is going to be one key/keyway for both. However, I *think* you can get the key in there without taking off the timing belt toothed gear.

so needle nose vise grips and try to yank whats left of the old key out...
well ill give it a try - whats the best pulley to use i want to stay stock size, maybe go one piece edit - just tried to get the woodruff out and it broke in two - one piece is still wedged under the timing pulley and the other is about 100 feet away cause i got mad and chucked it as hard as could... needless to say i now need to pull the whole front of the motor apart cause the timing belt has to come off so the timing gear can come off so the keyway can be repaired... On the bright side my I was able to tear my front end apart in about 30 minutes last night

yea ive done it once, i know it will be faster going this time
what all did you remove to get to the goods? last time i did it i took both the radiator off and the alternator off - then the timing covers can you get away with just removing the timing covers? oh and does this look like the right pulley? not bad for $120 |

I pulled off the radiator, power steering pump, power steering bracket, a/c belt tensioner bracket, timing cover, and then its a quick pulley removal to take the belt off.

woodruff and pulley ordered / / im going to use the tap and steering wheel puller method to get the timing sprocket out
ill report back in a few days... hopefully with a success story! thanks for all the help guys, as always |

careful with the puller - do not use the sprocket on the back of the crank pulley as a place to grab to pull it out. Those teeth will break right off and you'll be in trouble. I've been there. It sucked.

yea im going to tap the holes in the face of the sprocket and use a steering wheel pulling to get it out
what sucks is - the pulley i ordered is out of stock so i have to find another source for one... anyone here have a line on the pulley? |

The Kartboy.com pulley should work- Tom sent me one to test, though I don't have it on quite yet. I can't imagine it doesn't because it's a standard Impreza size pulley, and those fit I'm told. It's like $86 shipped Priority Mail.
