Metalic scraping sound - front diffff?

After I’ve driven for a while I notice a scraping sound when I let off the gas. It gets louder the more I drive. I thought it was a dust shield but I’ve checked my front wheels and all is in place. It’s a pretty loud noise. Could this be something related to the front diff?

I’ve also had some binding issues for a while (probably Solenoid C) but that’s been happening for quite a while. The scraping sound is something more recent.

Anyone experience anything like this?

P.S. I’m at 199992 hahaha Thought I’d might make it to 200k. lol

check your gearbox mounts the tailshaft may be touching the heat sheild above it.if you have bottomed out the exhaust you bend it up and it rubs on the shaft

Re: Metalic scraping sound - front diffff?

I'm betting the rubber mounts and bushings almost everywhere are probably needing replacement at that mileage. The rubber starts breaking down from age mostly and starts cracking and getting hard and stops doing its job correctly. Take a look at the rear diff bushings, trans mounts, etc.

One thing to try, is while someone else puts the car from P to R and also to D while you look underneath the car, you can see just from the torque transfer how much movement there is.

Interestingly I've been reading about problems with Duty Solenoid C and I ran a code check. It was a code 24 which is Solenoid C. Put the FWD fuse in and the noise went away.

On a side note the car was amazing in FWD. Been driving it for over 14 yrs and never had lit up the front tires before. lol

Just be careful, do it enough, or even the first time you do it, it can cause the ring gear or pinion shaft gear to shear off leaving you with a very costly repair as the transmission needs to be dropped to repair.

Does the Duty solenoid c throw a code on the dash. I have something going on buy no codes. Do you have to check for codes or will a light come on when something is wrong?

The power light will flash 16 times at start up if there is a transmission code which a faulty Sol C will do. However, if there is a valve stuck or partially stuck, no code will be thrown and could give issues. More than likely though, if there is no code, the transfer clutch is no longer good in the transmission.
