speedometer stopped working..

Hi ,
My speedometer stopped working and the " Engine Check Light" came on..Does this relate to a speed sensor ? If yes, what causes this problem and how expensive is a vehicle speed sensor for 1992 SVX?
Thanks,
I.

Likely, the speed sensor on the passenger side of the transmission, on the diff housing, has failed. I don't know the cost, someone will probably provide a link for that. Not too difficult to change.

Re: speedometer stopped working..

Does the power light flash at startup? That's what mine did when the speed sensor failed in my car. Luckily I had an extra one attached to the 6-speed I bought that arrived the week before. I'm told the sensor is super expensive from Subaru. Best to pick one up from a parting out thread.

Re: speedometer stopped working..

If it's the sensor, you're lucky. If it's the gear that drives the sensor, you're in for a surprise. To check the operation of the drive gear you need to pull the sensor. Insert a flathead screwdriver where the sensor was in the notch for the sensor. Put a mark on the handle and drive a few feet. If it rotates, it's functioning, if not you have to pull the diff to replace the $2 part. The sensor is located right by the diff dipstick. Good luck, I had both go bad and it cost around $500 to repair. A malfunction with this sensor will mess up all kinds of things from your fans to your cruise control, wipers and awd system.
