Talking spoiler

would removing the spoiler have any negative effect on performance. I'm thinking it's just for style and would only be a small weight reduction.

Hard to say but I would be shocked if it didn't screw up the aerodynamics.

Seeing as many cars came from the factory without the spoiler, I'd say that removing it will cause little or no aerodynamic damage.

Re: spoiler

The stock spoiler has little to no effect. In any case, no spoiler is going to have much of an effect at normal highway speeds

Get shocked! Of course it doesn't "screw up the aerodynamics". I have driven different SVX cars thousand of miles without a spoiler and after putting adding one, driving thousands of miles with it on, there is no noticeable
difference either way.

Thats was I was thinkin.I always new guys with fwd civics adding huge spoilers were probly making their ricers slower, but just for a fun trivia question does anyone know exactly how much our spoilers weigh?

Maybe 10 pounds at most. It's made of fiberglass. I have one in the garage, I can get an exact weight if you really care tomorrow lol

Re: spoiler

This topic has been hashed around here before, and my uneducated opinion remains the same: The SVX is aerodynamically cleaner without the factory wing, and if the wing adds any downforce at all, it's solely due to the added weight on the tail. It is not some sort of upside-down airfoil to provide "negative lift," nor is it angled with the trailing edge higher than the leading edge, a configuration which would deflect airflow upward and thus apply some downward pressure to the rear of the car, at speed.

Re: spoiler

I tend to agree. It's purely cosmetic in this cars case, and you'll likely improve your coeficient of drag by removing it.

I believe the car's .29cd was measured with the spoiler on, so I don't think removing it could make it any lower.

I'll bet it would. Anything sticking out into the airflow results in drag; if the wing does actually create any downforce, the penalty would be even more drag.

What we need here is an aerodynamicist and a wind tunnel.

Clearly no one knows for sure what happens. It is possible that the wing reduces turbulance. Maybe it helps, maybe it hurts. It probably doesn't make a big difference but it has to make some difference. No one knows if it is good or bad though unless they have an inside source in Subaru that worked on the project.

Re: spoiler

My vote is it increases drag slightly. On a car without one, the rear "turbulence" is mitigated by the pointy trunk lid.

^^ This. Speculation only leads to false information.
