Angry Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

At around 3:20 pm today (10/26) I was rear ended and pushed into the vehicle ahead of me.

I was heading in the left lane down the street, traffic was rather busy ahead of me, and suddenly the car in front of me was stopped. I slammed on my brakes and came to a complete stop, all while at the same time looking in my rearview mirror and knowing the '77 Chevy Silverado behind me had no chance of stopping in time. So I braced for impact. As soon as he slammed into the back of me my eyes closed, and when I re-opened them I noticed I was halfway on the median and the car that was ahead of me, a Chevy Monte Carlo, was now on my right and that his left rear taillight was busted out. I sat there for a second, swore my choice word, and stepped out of the vehicle to walk around to the back. Not pretty. The bumper is smashed, not as badly as I thought it'd be, but there's a hole punctured in it. The trunk was pushed up and forward rather violently. Then I walked around to the right side and was greeted by a dented front right wheel fender and scrapes and dents all along the entire right side of the vehicle.

Immediately we all began to exchange information. The guy who hit me is one of my good friends, and he has complete coverage. The guy ahead of me has liability.

At that moment a police car rolled up. He stepped out and asked if we'd called the police yet; we explained we were in the process of exchanging info and would be doing that ASAP. Then he left...

Because traffic was so horribly congested and we were a main cause of it, we moved our vehicles into the Wells Fargo parking lot. (Luckily my car was still driveable). The entrance was exactly next to where the accident happened. I called the police and reported what had happened. 10-15 minutes later an officer showed up, took all of our info and had us fill out accident reports. He gave us all a report number, and told me and the guy in front of me that we were free to go. The driver of the truck was issued a ticket for following too closely and stayed behind with the cop.

Some pictures I took with my phone immediately after the accident: (btw, that's not a JDM folding sideview mirror...)

Wow.

I am sorry. that SUCKS. Enough to say it twice... that SUCKS.

I am glad that you are OK, that is the most important thing.

Let us know how it goes with the insurance process. Sympathies for your car and well wishes for you from a fellow mid-western Claret driver just a few miles down the road in Iowa.

Re: Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

Wow, that poor guy, it's the worst when you get a ticket for following to closely, bad enough the accident happened. I mean, people are always following to closely in today's world.

Oh yeah, bummer about your SVX too.

Kidding, kidding. That seriously sucks. To repair that would suck and cost a freaking fortune. I think that when an insurance company totals a vehicle they should be responsible for replacing it. It wasn't your fault, why should you have to go through the effort?

Ouch!!!
How's your neck and back? It can take a day or two for such injuries to become painful.

Re: Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

Oh, tomorrow is easy to predict. Tomorrow is where the insurance company compensates you with a joke of a check expecting you to hand your once very nice SVX to them. However, you can then buy it back, use that check to get a half decent one, transfer your goodies over to the new one, and help others with parts they need that you have left.

Re: Rear Ended: SVX sandwiched

+2.

Buy it back, and part it out, or sell as a rolling parts car.

If you know of a blue SVX, or maybe a pearlie, or silver, or black ... maybe I'll buy that one, and you can get another Claret, that this car's parts will fit right onto... OR, the back half of my car can be grafted onto yours...

But in all seriousness... I hope everything works out of this. I have an extra set of wheels with shagged-out toyos, if you need some rollers, to take your wheels off that car. I travel occasionally to the Fremont, NE area, I have family around there, and in southwest Iowa... so I am pretty familiar with Omaha, even though I live over near Ames, IA. Let me know if I can help.
