Re: dumb question about colors...

Don't quote me, or completely rely on it... I don't have color codes handy or anything...

But my Claret with a black roof, the black is just glossy, not metallic at all. It just looks like ink.
(And due to poor repairs and sun exposure... not all of the black on my car is glossy anymore. )

I believe the Ebony SVX was ALL body color, including the roof and trunk lid, and it is a metallic paint, with a red under-tone in direct light.

The Ebony Pearl /Ebony Mica is code #235 and has the red metallic flecks in it. This color is the same for all model years.

There have been reports of Ebony Pearl with green flecks instead of red. These are rare and have not be substantiated as having a different color code.

The black paint used on the roof, side garnishes, trunk and spoiler on the factory two-tone cars is NOT the same color as the Ebony Pearl. It is a generic, glossy, non-metallic black. There is no existing paint code for this color.

Re: dumb question about colors...

Good info.

I thought Subaru's black with green metallic flake was Onyx Black, rather than Ebony Black, and Onyx came along in the late 90s, and was used on Imprezas, and other Subarus...

But again, I could be wrong on that one.

Pretty much any non-metallic black should be "close enough" that you wouldn't notice it.

yeah well...that kinda sounds like a recipe for something that wouldn't look that good. there has GOT to be a code for that color. Subaru didn't just throw random black paint on there - i'm just not buying it.

I have been trying to find a code, but there is none. When I had a spoiler done, they sprayed it with a generic glossy black and it look just fine.

Actually, I've wanted to know what the paint code for the black top was.

Earl probably knows, he's restored a few of these, plus, he just knows stuff.

Fair enough. So if I simply want to get touch up paint do I go to a body shop and just ask them for generic glossy black?

BTW, just to clear up a point about Subaru paint codes. Dave notes here that the colour code for Ebony Pearl is 135 on one website and 235 on another.

Both are correct.

What has become obvious in our registration process is that the colour code listed will actually reflect the year the car was built.*

So take Ebony as a case in point, and it's a good one to use as an example. Ebony was produced for all years in some markets. An Ebony built for 1991 release [The SVX was sold in Japan in 1991] will have the colour code 135.

An Ebony built for 1992 will have the paint code 235.

An Ebony built for 1994 will have the paint code 435.

OK, you get the picture. The same year related system applies to other SVX paint codes. Now you can amuse yourself checking your paint code on the chassis plate on the suspension turret and verifying it matches the year of manufacture or at least the sales/marketing year. .

I have not studied Subaru paint codes any further than this but it appears they moved to a different paint code system round 98-99. This system that the SVX codes use was in place for most models from about 88 to 97-98.

I hope this trivia will amuse somebody.

Joe

* It may be the case that the paint received its "year" prefix on the year the paint mix was ratified at HQ [Gunma] for the next model run. We don't yet have sufficient data to prove that all years of Ebony availability had year numbers, 135, 235, 335, 435, 535, 635 etc.

Re: dumb question about colors...

I think interesting, helps confirm year model of car, especially in overseas markets where registration was often a year or two later than production.

Cool stuff Joe, thanks
