climate control DEF -> loss of power
I have a small problem with my SVX '93
When I put the climate control to DEF the car lose power. It can still drive byt it gets slow. It is properly a bad ground connection some were, but I could use some help on where to look. I have taken the one at the battery off, moved and re-attached. Does it do the same thing on 'AUTO' temp set @66 degrees?.. Def. also starts the A/C compressor, (a H.P. absorber) could be trying to sieze up....other can be bad battery (charge and test) start the car and turn on everything except the DEF. see if you experience the same loss of power. Battery connections (clean) ..alt. (check output voltage). Check Idler bearings.

I have now tried to turn on the rear window heater, the seats, mirros, couise control, with-out any change. The car run fine
It is only when I turn on the DEF or use the AUTO on the climate. Can the compressor for the air-con realy take so much power that the car have difficuly driving? For me it sounds like the ignition is way off. The Idler bearings - Do you mean the one for the timing belt? And yes I meant 'Oprah' -thanks- --------- Henrik -Denmark- |

I have noticed that the RPM stayes at 600. Is there something about that the RPM should go to 900 whene the Air-con is on? I have not tried to run the car without the belt on. |

Try driving it with the belt off then and see if it changes anything..... it can spin freely now but the compressor clutch isnt engaged while the car is off, still leaving the compressor as a possibility.

I have now had the belt off. The sympthoms are better, but there still is a significant loss. Maybe it is normal. When the engine gets worm, there is no problem.
Btw, the compressor belt tensioner bearing need to be changed I think. Is it possible to change the bearing itself or do I need a compleate new wheel. |

An idler pulley completely seized on my old Suby wagon (with a whopping 90 HP) and all it did was emit a blood-curdling shriek and shed the belt. There were no telltale drivability issues. The AC compressor definitely saps a bit, but if it were binding-up to the point of causing "significant" power loss I think the belt would let you know. Perhaps your compressor is failing but I'd bet that's only contributing to some other problem.
