Head Gaskets

Can the head gaskets be changed without pulling the engine out?

Todd (wawazat) is changing his head gaskets right now. Well, more accurately, he's busy reassembling the engine. On a stand. Out of the car.

Hint. Hint.

I'm guessing that, even if there's enough clearance to pull the heads while the engine is in the car (and I doubt that), it'd be way easier to do it with the engine on a stand.

I agree with Nick

While I guess you could remove the heads whil the engine is on the car, it wouldn't be fun or easy. I'd highly recommend taking it out of the car John.

Best of luck to you,
Todd

Hey John (svx commuter)

I'll get you the head bolt lengths (2 different sizes) tomorrow when I undo & redo one of my heads

Todd, when you have the head off, could you measure the diameter of the inlet and exhaust valves please?
It doesn't give this info in the manual.
Harvey.

Re: I agree with Nick

The mechanic who replaced my headgaskets left the engine in the car. He may have loosened the mounts and jacked the engine up a bit, but he did not remove it.

Re: Re: I agree with Nick

Gary,

That is really good news as it would be a lot less work to do in the engine compartment. To get the head off the cam shaft has to come out. The head bolts are under the cam shaft. How much did he charge you for this work? Do I remember you saying it was done at a dealer?

It looks really tight in there. It doesn't look like enough room to pull the bolts out of the head. Maybe the bolts go in the head and then the whole assy slides in? The head bolts have to be torqued and it sounds tricky getting the cam shaft in and out. It has to be kept parallel to the head. If it cocks it can get stuck and damaged.

John

Re: Re: Re: I agree with Nick

John - I had it done at a local gas station - the guy has done quite a bit of work for me on my cars. The cost was 1500 including timing belt, water pump, gaskets... I can pull the bill if you need more detail. I don't know how he did it all with so little room, but I think he did unbolt the mounts and jack the engine up a bit.
