Crankshaft pully grinding

Well I noticed a noise under the hood and seen that my crankshaft pully is starting to grind away at my center timing belt cover. I watched the pully closely and it doesn't look bent and the cover is one tight. Any thoughts?

Yes it is parting company at the rubber. Time for another.

Harvey.

Re: Crankshaft pully grinding

Harvey is right,

Mine was doing it for a year.... lol

Got another one from SubaFreak and replaced it just yesterday... lol

Did my ACC belts at the same time.

took about 1hr total and cost about $65, including the belts from Subaru.

Re: Crankshaft pully grinding

That's what I was afraid of. Well I guess it's time for a lightweight pully and a new timing cover. Thanks.

Re: Crankshaft pully grinding

A new lightweight under-drive might or might not be a good idea. Didn't work for me.
(I know, light weight doesn't necessary say under-drive but there are some choices)
Just a thought.

The single piece lightweight pullys (not the underdriven ones). Are really nice.

I have them on two of my three cars and will be putting one on the third when the time comes!

Re: Crankshaft pully grinding

There are TONS out there. Any for the current H-4's work. Don't cheap out and buy a $35 piece of crap one though, chances are it won't be perfectly balanced and you'll have a noticable vibration at certain RPM's. Spend some money, get a good one, and you'll thank yourself later on.

Click here for a selection of some of the pulleys available.

Underdrive is a term for a slightly smaller than stock pulley and there are underdrive pulleys for the a/c, alternator, etc but most commonly used for the crank pulley-less weight allows the engine to rev faster. It also can allow for a few extra horsepower.

It also means that in certain driving situations the alternator may not produce enough current to provide use of electrical components and keep the battery charged... like parking on the freeway for hours in traffic conditions in Seattle Tacoma area.

Re: Crankshaft pully grinding

thanks. hum putting underdrive pully then would make a little more revolution , i dont know if its that good for a stock engine to over-rev continusly more than its supposed to ?

I won't over rev it in any way...Just any slight weight reduction on the rotational force of the crank will allow it to move "more freely" so it will rev up into the power band quicker and can also allow a couple more horsepower.

Edit: Sorry for the thread hijack Redlightningsvx
