Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

Keith,
That square socket fits a 1/2" ratchet IIRC. Make sure you can get the top/ filler plug out first before removing the bottom/drain plug though, for obvious reasons. I would follow the owner's manual recommendation as far as lubricant.

Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

There is a special socket that's a little bit bigger than a 1/2" drive square. But usually if it's not too siezed, any 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar will work, just watch that you don't twist the drive in there.

75-W90 API GL-5 gear oil, capacity is ~2 pints. Full is when the fluid level is even with the bottom of the upper hole. (Make sure the car is sitting level)

Thanks everyone!
Will tackle it tomorrow after the Texas Tech Red Raiders beats the Texas A&M folks! Too late for me tonight.

I appreciate all the help.

Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

Hijack thread

So, how often does the gasket go bad on the rear diff? Its part number 28361 on this diagram.

http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?mod...category=195-1

My diff is dripping oil. Its always got a drip of fresh oil on it, and the whole thing is just caked. Im trying to pinpoint what exactly is leaking, so I can get it fixed before something happens. I checked the oil in it, and its a little below the top hole. So how much work would be involved if I was to replace that main seal on it? Would I have to drop everything off the car? Or can I take it off and replace it while its on the car? Thanks! -Dennis

Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

Oh oops didnt realize that. Its the main gasket for the rear diff. Heres the diagram.

Again its part number 28361.

Here is a picture of mine. Edit: Nevermind, I can see clearly that you would have to drop the diff out to take the rear cover off.... Just wouldnt be that easy. So, judging by the pic, do you think thats whats leaking? Then if so, just how hard would it be to replace it?

Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

Spray it all off with some brake cleaner and wait a few days and see if you can see where it is coming from. Could be the gasket, but could also just be the plugs, they will leak some if they aren't tight.

To get the rear cover off, undo the big bolt at the top that goes through the hanger, and the two nuts at the crossmember, unbolt the rear flange of the drive shaft and lower it down, and put a jack under the diff and push it forward until the studs clear the crossmember, and then let it drop down until you can get the cover off. You might not even have to get a gasket, just scrape all the old gunk off and use some black silicone. (Or three bond if you can get a small tube of it, that stuff works great)

Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

It could also be the axle seals (where the axles plug into the diff) but that looks more like the gasket to me.

Re: to drain the oil out of the rear-end...

So, how hard would you say the job is? And about how long to do the job? Anything else I should get if I am to do this? Can I get new busings somewhere?
