Re: lots of smoke on start up

Wow that sort of suxs. I feel for you. How many miles (km) on the engine? I have about 310k miles or something on my engine. Not really sure how many but it is a lot. The smoke at start up is from oil sitting in the engine or could be the fuel system running really rich or fuel sitting in the engine. This where the color comes into play? What color is the smoke? I can never tell on my car. The black smoke is GAS and the brown smoke is oil. Gosh I hope I got that right. Mine smokes sometimes when I punch the throttle.

So in any case I really like the SEAFOAM cleaning. I learned about that on this site and I think it works really well. It cleans out the engine sludge and fuel injectors. I have used that on all my cars and it cleans out the engine very well. It cleans out the crank case, fuel and intake.

It is very on usual for any Subaru to pull oil into the engine from the intake valve seals unless they are really gone and the valve guide has opened a lot.

Then of course there is the PCV valve. That has to be working or blow by gas mixed with oil doesn’t get pulled back into the intake. This is usually recommended as the first check.

Does your car start right away or is hard cranking? Hard cranking could be leaking injectors.

Peace,
John

Re: lots of smoke on start up

The conventional guideline:

Blue smoke=oil
White smoke=coolant in the combustion chambers
Black smoke=carbon (fuel)

Is the car using oil? Coolant? Running badly? Getting lousy mileage? Hard to start?

Re: lots of smoke on start up

its only done 256,000kms.
i use injector cleaner from time to time and i use some engine oil cleaner etc some times.
i do have some oil lose but i think its thu the tappet cover?
What does the PCV valve looks like?
The svx does start right away. sometimes there is an delay of 3 or 4 seconds

Re: lots of smoke on start up

Man, check out this video of mine...

http://pictures.sprintpcs.com/share....tate=RETRIEVED

You think yours was bad, lol.

Anyways, to your issue. Here is a link to the thread that I started.

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46457

It gives some insight as to what can cause the smoke. In my case, Im not sure. Its seemed to stop doing it completely now. That video is the second time it did it to me, and was the worst. It got better after that, untill nothing came out anymore. I think I may have overfilled my engine with oil a little bit, not much. Let some of it out, and my problems have seemed to have gone away. Best of luck to you! -Dennis
