In terms of hours, I'm not sure how many. I guess it all depends on how experienced you are and how many hours you are able to spend in a row. I for one had not done any major work on a car ever 9for christsakes I don't even change my own oil!), but with the knowledge that it could be done with enough time and effort I figured I would just learn as I worked.

When I was doing work on my car, we had a reasonaly warm Minnesota winter, but I also had a full-time job and classes to take care of as well. All told, I put the thing on blocks September 20, 2001 and was able to drive it in late April of this year. Project car indeed! I guess if you have something else you can drive while you are working and a decent place to do the work, then time is not that much of a concern necessarily

Not sure about the neutral revving question...hope this helps.

Clutching his valuables

Unless your auto tranny is toast, and you absolutely MUST have a 5/6 speed, for me, the way to upgrade the car would be a small supercharger giving about 100hp, and a beefed up auto from the likes of Level 10.

The present tranny can handle the load, but not the heat. the engine is so high on torque output, that even as N/A, the tranny is making a lot of heat. So add a cooler to save it.

This implies the transmission needs to be upgraded for torque, the horsepower is incidental. The power curve of the engine, even with or particularly with a charge cooled and driven supercharger, that the manual stickshift is really only for street cred, will add very little to what the car can do.

Graham in the UK does not agree with me on this, he reckons the manual box is about 200Kgs lighter than the auto. I agree and know it would be lighter, but question 200Kgs, and would like to see both cars on the scales to verify.

Ever check the weight of a WRX?? Not far off an SVX, even with manual.

Joe,

I think you're right on the tranny weight.

If I remember correctly, Micah had weighed it when he had the tranny shipped to Level 10, and it came in just under 200lbs.

My memory could be wrong though... Do a search.

weight a minute

Could be right VK.

It is true, when you are talking auto, you really have to add the weight of the torque convertor too, and it is not too light, in fact a lot heavier than your average clutch.

Would like to get two cars on the scales to compare.

Joe

There's a big difference between 200 pounds, and 200 kilograms, though...

shifter rods

Alex,

When Huck did his conversion he used an Impreza tranny and had to lengthen the shifter rods with steel bars. Did you run into this with the Legacy tranny? How does the 5 speed do on hills? Does it slip because of the SVX's weight?

Alex,

What did you do with your automatic tranny after you took it out?

The weight doesn't seem to make much of a difference with the clutch I'm using; if you let go of the clutch without hitting the accelerator while stopped the engine dies accordingly. I'm running a lightened flywheel so that might have a bit of an affect, though. Hills are no problem as long as you can feather the clutch a little so as to not bog the engine. All _seems_ well now, althgouh the engine is a little rough and I still need to look into that further.

I'd like to investigate either a stronger set of gears or the WRX STi 6-speed eventually because of the upcoming supercharger that has been talked about in the mods forum. Either way will probably be an expensive proposition. I'm not sure how much I want to pump into this car, as it's already 10 years old, but it only has about 70k miles so hopefully it will last for quite a while with whatever gearbox I use!

Um...the old tranny. Well, it's still in my garage waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. I'd like to think that I could get some money for it, but I don't think that will happen...
