Sad Day for my SVX :(

Hello all, I know I am rarely on this forum, sorry, but I have had my SVX for nearly two years now, and I love it, The other day when driving home on my grade, I lost my 4th gear, Seeing that now I have up to 3erd, I feel i have lost the clutch all the way... when in Drive it only has 1st. So when I got home I dropped the pan on the Tranny just to find it full of metal... no good, So after getting some estimates on how much a rebuild is, and how much I have to spend being a starving Film student, I find my self almost deciding to just sell the car for parts and move on, It has 175,000 miles on it, but still runs true, leaks some PS fluid, but not too bad... I want to know if I should sell it for parts, or is there some special formula to get a cheap tranny rebuild? The car runs soooo good, and is such a champ in the winter snow, I would hate to see it go, plus I just got the darn thing smoged! Any info would be great, also I I do end up selling for parts, how much should I let the whole thing go for? $1000? $1500? or is better selling it in individual parts?

Thanks,

Jon

A few things...

From the way you say that you lost 4th and now have up to 3rd, I would assume thtat you have an Auto... But what is this clutch you speak of?? Also, what does it mean to "get the car smogged"???

If you are looking to sell something you might also want to fill out your user profile alittle more... It's alittle hard to trust someone with 1 post and no background...

Good luck

~ Chris

I'm sure you could get closer to $2,000 for the whole thing. If you do a search you should be able to get a few estimates on a new transmission, and possibly change to a 5-spd. If you do part it out, i'd be interested in the Exhaust. What year is it and where are you located?

" I lost my 4th gear, Seeing that now I have up to 3erd, I feel i have lost the clutch all the way... when in Drive it only has 1st."

Please clarify. Have you all speeds up to third, or only first?

Sorry to be so shady, Thanks for the quick replies tho. My registration says it is a '93, but on the inside of the door it says '91, sooo... lol, anyways here are some more pick I just took, it is 10:06 pm right now, so they are at night, I have always used this car as transportation, and never took the time to take some pics of it, so sorry, I am a film person, so if you want some backgound, I am on DVXuser.com, I am a senior member there with some rep, I am under Jon Neely like here, my phone # is 559-283-0357, If there is anything else to gain your trust that you would like me to do, just say it, I have nothing to hide, I got this car after my aunt died back in 2006, she was the 2end owner, we have always taken good car of the car, the back could use a wax, but there is no body damage except for the front of the hood, where the first owner must have bumped in to a trailer hitch is my guess, cuz there is just a dent going directly in, the hood is still strait tho, and it would be a easy fix, also the right fender was chewed on by my aunts dog, so it seriously was chewed and you can see teeth marks, IDK what was with the dog for it to do that but it happened, everything else is fine, the interior is in perfect condition, the driver seat shows some wear, and has a small rip, but it is not huge or increasing in size, passenger and back seats are like new, the dash has no digs or sun damage, all gauges work, brand new M+S tires, got them at the end of winter, all glass is good except for windshield, it is cracked, but everything else is like new. Like I said, I just had the thing smogged 2 months ago. the internal clutches in 4th gear (high gear) are no longer holding, engine revs uncontrollably in Drive, when going around 65, but I have 1st,2end,3erd, and reverse when putting the transmission into those gears separately, i hope that answers that question. I will take more pics tomorrow, it is the only car I have as of right now, so I will just cruise around in 3erd and go no faster than 55mph,I hope that clears up all confusion, I live in Fresno,CA, which is right snap dab in the middle of the state. The car has no rust, and I hate to see it go. also my email is jonneelyfilms@yahoo.com, I will check back here as much as possible, but I check my email almost hourly.

thanks,

Jon

"smoged" California emission test... that seem to confuse some. It has a sun roof, not moon roof, no glass just a piece of the roof sliding back lol. The color is Blk, with Blk/ dark Gray interior, original paint.

You say, "I have 1st,2end,3erd, and reverse when putting the transmission into those gears separately"

Do you have to select each gear manually with the lever?
If you select third with the lever, will it then shift automatically 1 - 2 - 3 ?

yes, if you put it in 3erd it will go threw 1st, 2end, and 3erd, but no higher, In drive it seems to start in 2end and stay... but putting it in 3erd and shifting, it wants to shift at a higher revs then it ust to, so I go threw manually 1st, then 2end then 3erd shifting into each one.

So is my orginal $1500 guess pretty close?

Jon
just to replace the windshield would cost almost $1,500 unless you have comp and it is recent damage

thus that is why it is not repaired....lol so obviously you wouldn't be buying this car for either a windshield or tranny... I think thats pretty apparent.

This is interesting as you have an N as the 10th digit of you VIN, which indicates it is a 1992 model (built in 1991).

All 1993 models sold in the U.S. were anniversary editions and all were Barcelona Red with beige interiors. Furthermore, all 1993 SVXs had the letter P in the 10th digit of the VIN.

Here are a few pics from this morning in my school parking lot, I lost 3erd gear too so it 1st and second now. The first couple pics just shot what is wrong with the car, But the car is in relatively great condition, I will be selling the car for whatever I can get for it, It will need to be picked up. I will make a thread in the for sale section soon.

Jon,

You have reported, "So when I got home I dropped the pan on the Tranny just to find it full of metal..." Was this confined to sludge type metal material which is not unusual, or actual small metal particles? Hopefully you should not immediately give up and presume great expense at this stage.

Trevor, If you have any hidden secret on how to save this transmission, please share it. then I took the pan off, It looked like a silver soup, the magnet was completely full, and looked like a crustacean that you would find on the bottom of the sea. It wont shift into any gear past 2end, The way that I look at this, is that if it cost anymore then 1500 to fix, I need to move on to another car, guys, I cant even afford to put a new windshield in the thing. How much should I ask for the car you think?
