SVX to the rescue!

I bought a 6000-lb tow rope today to use at my Snow-X racing. People are always stuffing their cars into snowbanks, and it's a good thing to have any time, as I saw today!

On the way home from buying the rope I was stopped at a red light and saw a Pontiac Sunfire dead in the intersection with the 4-way flashers going. He was sitting in the middle of two lanes, and blocking the right lane of the intersecting traffic. This is a major street (called Hunt Club Rd.) in rush hour traffic. Here's where he was stuck, between the Eastbound lanes of Hunt Club.

So I turn down the side road (Bridle Path), park, and walk back to the Sunfire. As I'm walking up the guy who owns the car runs up to his car with a washer fluid jug half full of gas and tries to pour it into the gas tank with some sort of improvised funnel. I walk up and ask him is he wants a tow, and he says "No, I'm good". Ya right. So I walk halfway back to my car and watch him try to start it. After 30 seconds of trying he gets out and starts heading over to me. So I ask him again if he wants a tow and he says yes. So I back my car onto the island between the right turning lane and the main road, hook up my brand new tow rope, and drag him off the street onto the island. Let him borrow my cell to call his folks, and all is good.

What got me the most is how easily the SVX dealt with it. I know Sunfires are small cars, but I didn't even feel him behind me. There was no tug when the rope went taught (it's braided, so it absorbs shocks), and I didn't know I was pulling him till I looked behind me and saw his car moving. I never had to touch the gas pedal once, I was actually riding the brakes a bit. The 3+ inches of frech snow were no hindrance either.

So after saying thanks, the next thing out of the kids mouth was "What kind of car is this?"

I love my car, it makes me look like a hero!

Chris,

You deserve to feel good. Not many would have bothered to help out.

That was a good deed for the day.

What did you attach the tow hooks to in order to pull him?

On the SVX? The loop under the rear bumper (right beside the exhaust tip). On the Sunfire it took me a minute to find his front tow point, which sucks when traffic is threatening to run you over while you lie in front of a car.

I used to drive a towtruck, so I know how you feel about the busy traffic! lol

Way to go though, these cars are way handy. This is a perfectly good exmple of that there are still good people out there!

I was thinking of welding some kind of reinforcement on the front and rear towhooks and getting a towrope myself for just such occasions.

Tow ropes are very handy and the SVX is a good puller. I have video I need to shrink and get online of one SVX pulling another SVX back onto firm ground after it had smashed up onto a snow bank and tipped over the edge of a ditch. That one took a bit of effort on the part of the SVX doing the towing, but it came through in the end.

There was a post on here YEARS ago about someone using their SVX to pull stumps one weekend. They had pictures and everything. I think I'd find another method before I did that.

My favorite personal Subaru towing story though is back when I had my '88 GL-10 wagon. I was driving on a sandy beach and parked in some loose sand next to a F-150. When I got back to my car the truck was stuck trying to move out of the sand (for Ford's sake I hope it was a 2 wheel drive). I offered to tow him out. He kinda laughed as his truck probably outweighed the Subie 2:1. I thought it was worth a try and we hooked up. I got in, definitely felt the pull on the rope for a moment, then the truck popped up out and was rolling behind me. Then the guy jumps out all excited and says he never even got a chance to put it into gear, he was still in neutral! Subaru rules!
