Cloverfield (SPOILER ALERT)

I went to see it last night. I won't give anything away, but I came out impressed. Not everyone liked it, the shakey camera was a bit much at times. Think Blair Witch Project, in New York, with explosions. At one point I was actually feeling a bit queezy from the screen moving around so much.

My advice for anyone thinking of seeing this: Unless you have a MAJOR home theatre sound system, go see it on the big screen. You need the big sound to go with this movie.

Anyone else seen it yet?

Do it in PMs, or tag this thread as a Spoiler alert.

Can you put that in the title for me? Seems people want to know, so I'll spill once it's up as a spoiler.

Alrighty.

SPOILER WARNING
DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE PLOT POINT ABOUT CLOVERFIELD

I guess you want to know then? Alrighty!

This movie has nothing whatsoever to do with Godzilla. I know there was speculation about Mothra and all that, but there's no Godzilla, no Mothra, and if you do a Google image search for "Cloverfield Monster", the thing you get looks nothing like the movie.

The first thing you see is some text saying this is part of the incident codenamed Cloverfield, and this tape was found in what used to be Central Park. Property of US Governement, classified, etc.

The entire movie is done with a camcorder. Starts at a party, something explodes, people run into the street, Statue of Liberty's head comes flying in with claw marks on it. Buildings start falling down in the distance.

At this point there's something a little too real. A building falls, there's a big dust cloud, and then it's a very lifelike recreation of 9/11. Dusty air, everything's grey, people walking around like zombies, paper falling....

Then it's a lot of running. You get glimpses of the monster, first when it smashes the Brooklyn Bridge, then on a TV in a store. You come to realize that this thing is indestructible. Rockets, Abrams Tanks, F-18's firing missiles, B-2's dropping 1000lbs bombs...nothing does more than knock it around.

The monster is huge. Something like 300' tall, 500'+ long with the tail. It has two long legs in front, two small legs in the rear, and a huge, turtle-like head with a serated beak. It's strong enough to shoulder 50 story buildings over. It also is covered in mini-monsters, about the size of a big dog. These things have 6-ish legs, and big nasty teeth. They are also poisonous, and if they bite you you will start to bleed out of your eyes, and then vomit blood, and possily explode. In any case, you die.

The whole movie is the main characters first running into the city to save a girlfriend, then trying to escape. At the end the guy and his girfriend and other friend who is carrying the camera are lifted out on a Huey chopper. This is when you see the monster being carpet bombed by the B-2. It seems to work at first, then the monster jumps out of the smoke cloud and slaps the Huey out of the air. They crash, then run and hide in a tunnel in Central Park. You hear air raid sirens start blaring, and then a radio from the helicopter announcing Operation "Hammer Down" is going active.

Hammer Down was previously explained as a "last resort" attack. And you can probably guess what that means. There's a big noise, falling rocks, and then silence.

Edit: After the explosion the movie goes to a previously recorded bit of the couple (this happens several times throughout the movie). This scene is them on a ferris wheel. Far in the background you see something fall into the ocean......

Plot: People go to party, monster attacks city, dude goes to save the GF, friend gets bitten by little monster then later explodes(or gets shot or something, I think), dude finds GF and they all die.....end of movie. No explanation if the monster is killed or where it came from or anything. I'd be happier if I would have bought a $7 baseball bat and hit myself in the face for 90 min.

ditto.

This movie was really creative concerning the monsters/aliens and their abilities (the little spider-aliens were the best). The special effects were very cool. Too bad you mostly heard the action rather than saw it. I spent 80% listening to some kid wheeze as he chased his best friend through Manhattan because he kept pointing the shaky camera at a wall or the floor. The only times the camera was calm was when he would fall over himself - then I could actually see what was going on in the movie and those moments were great.

I would say, rent it so you can fast forward to the good scenes.. The shaking camera made me really sick - if you have seen blair witch, the camera shakes more often, rotates all around and ends with even less answers - only that they couldn't defeat the creatures (that's what the jibberish at the end whispered).

fair description of this movie:
Put action figures and a video camera in your dryer then set it for 1.5 hours. movie done.
