Mad Muffler Mod v1.3

So I want to eventually upgrade my exhaust and have thought about the mad muffler mod but I don't have a welder. So, I pulled off the muffler and was able to reach the 2 tubes with a 1/2" drill bit. I drilled several holes in each tube. As soon as I can figure out how to post sound clips I will post some.

Search for mad muffler and you will find a couple of posts. I labeled it v1.3 because at least two others have done variations of the mod. Basically instead of cutting open the muffler I was able to drill holes in the two tubes that other people have cut out giving the exhaust a more direct flow to the exhaust tips. It definitely has more of a growl to it now.

This just in: Baffle perforation befuddles performance gurus

(Just ignore me.)

Sounds like a fun thing to do. Awaiting sound clips.

Wow! That is a big difference in sound. I like it a lot. (Will look up mad muffler mod). I will not argue the benefits of this power wise because I don't have a clue and won't pretend I do. The sound though, I like a lot. Thanks for posting up the sound clips.

Anything which frees up the final muffler in the system must result in an advantage, Just how much is very much open to conjecture.

The basic excellent dynamics of the OEM system should not be upset and I am confident that this method of creating an increase in sound output, is far and away preferable, to spending money on an after market set up of dubious design.

If the links don't work then when they open click on "user galleries" in the title above the photo. Click on WYSVX and the sound clips are in there.

New sound clip

So I have another sound clip. I used a mp3 player wired to a reflector post. I tried to make it into 2 smaller files but it didn't work. You can hear the new muffler sound at take off and then again after I turn around go by the other direction. If the link takes you to the wrong place follow the directions in the above post and it's listed as take off. It sounds good with the sound up.

Hasn't it been proven that there are clear and present flaws in the OEM system? I could've sworn it had.

You have to understand where Trevor is coming from. The engineers constructed the exhaust in such a way to have the SVX perform in a certain way. It is not for pure all out performance but rather it balances compromises like loud noises, emissions, etc. In this respect, the stock exhaust is a really good fit for the SVX. I wouldn't disagree with that.

As for performance, the testing method to see how the exhaust outperforms the stock exhaust needs to be scientifically tested. This has not been proven yet. Of course in no way does this mean that exhaust X is not making more horsepower in a certain rpm or throughout the rpm powerband than a stock one. If it does though, it may compromise the car in some other respect that the engineers did not intend. I belive this is were Trev is coming from but I could be wrong.

I still like the sound of it though.
