help me choose a xhaust
ok i need input on what you guys think the ultimate xhaust system would be ??
taking note that we do not require cats over here but we do have certain noise laws but to what extent seems to change per city or which cop piks up up lol.. so come on and give me some tips and clues.. |

Google will provide lots of relevant reading, but stay clear of the BS infomercial stuff, written with no other purpose than to open cheque books. Also bugger what it sounds like, "go" is the object. P.S. My choice would be a completely separate dual pipes of relatively quite small diameter, so as to take advantage of the even firing order inherent with the flat six . What is more this is a mechanically efficient set up.

what size tubing ID, would you choose, Trevor? One of my favorite exhaust systems was a true dual using 2" tubing, with two resonators, and two mufflers. Of course now if I had to do it again on a close to stock SVX I would use four resonators.

Hmmm...1.75" duals, resonators in place of the stock pre-cats, two small mufflers in place of the stock muffler.

Hmm...Zoomies sticking up through the hood...
j/k. It'd definently have o be a true dual setup. Since you dont need cats, my guess would be to use two resonators per side (Diffrent lenghth resonators to cover a wider frequency range) and perhaps some short mufflers a the ends

Further down the pipe excessive pipe diameter can provide a means for "slugs" of gas to rebound as it were, rather than retain their inertia. One could say the flow becomes confused rather than smooth. Something to avoid is placing elements providing expansion too close together, with little in the way of a good straight run where inertia can build. It will be noted that most production systems place the final element close to end, of the system for this reason. Whatever, it is impossible to exactly design a one off home grown system, one can only do what is sensible.

and to add ive been quoted 1200 for a whole new system trevor and other kiwis will know MIDAS and MAGOO .. both roughly same price and same setup.. custom made extractors onto 2.5 pipe then two into one then resonator then a smaller than our factory muffler at the rear but same position.. tried chasing a svx i seen this arvo that had a single exit and sounded pretty good, but i was in my wee 1ltr justy and he blew away lol

As I understand the rather broad terminology, a resonator is of straight through construction, with absorbent material to allow outward expansion of gas pulses, thus to a certain degree, killing resonance and sound.
A muffler is similar but also incorporates closed pipes and or baffles which change the direction of the gas flow. This arrangement is more restrictive. In this part of the world a "muffler" can be a "silencer". I have never seen an exact interpretation of the terms so that what I have accepted as correct could be astray. Several opinions are required.

Is your OEM system shot and must be replaced. Do you wish to make different music. Are you hoping for an increase in performance, The MIDAS and MAGOO guys will be excellent welders benders and fitters, but that is about it. They can only make a stab at things based on hearsay. It would appear that they are simply staying as close to the OEM system as possible, while adding pretty stuff. I will bet that your $1200 dollars will buy you bugger all horsepower and in fact some could very well go down the “custom” drain pipe. Are they intending to fabricate a special one off manifolds? Will these incorporate equal length headers? There efforts could be reasonable, bad or very bad. Do a search and check on what young Tom has fabricated.

Here is a pic of the front part of my exhaust. The one thing too it that you need to decide what you are doing motor-wise. You have done nothing but talk about twin turbo, s/c SVX's making incredible power. Unless you feel like paying for 2-3 exhaust systems, figure out what your motor configuration will be and THEN design your exhaust.

just unbolt the stock exhaust from the stock resonator. It will be loud enough to piss off the neighborhood, and really doesn't sound as bad as you'd think... think: porsche with an exhaust leak

Try a 2.5 inch system
Hey I'm running a 2.5 inch true dual system on my 94 LS, and i'm glad i dont have a rear driveshaft to interfere with it. To tell the truth, i wish i did. but i'll tell ya what, the EG33 can really sing a sweet song. At first i just had stright pipe out the back. About a weeks worth of idleing through town i decided to shut her up a bit so i put one Thrush Glas-Pac per pipe to quiet her down a bit. My system is basically easy to do (If you have a welder of any sort, somewhere to get angles bent and a few days to spend getting it all to fit together) and it dosn't really restrict flow to bad. I took off all my heat shields (other than the ones on the body) then cut my head pipe 13 inches from the spot where the exhaust manifold meets the head pipe. I then used an adapter to go from the stock size pipe to the 2.5 inch pipe I used to go out the back. There is a large amount of bends to think about so map out your exhaust b4 you do it. So check out my CarDomain page to see all my exhaust mods http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2488463

I did alot of test fitting before i got it all right. I'll tell you what i live in Iowa ,USA and the worst thing i ever got was a warning for loud exhaust. I really didnt notice any performance gains but i really wasnt looking for any either. I just wanted a loud ass exhaust system. i used one 2.5'' into two 2.5'' 45 degree angle tips that echo (resinate) and amplify the sound by 20%. its loud as hell and in Iowa, we dont have emission tests so its not like i have to get my car inspected either. I have lots of exhaust mod pixs if you ever want to see them let me know on my cardomain page or just PM me one here.

SVXual, I do know there was a lot of talk about it here. The most annoying thing that came out of exhaust mods that was done here is the noise/resonance at a certain rpm (I remember reading). I personally didn't take it all in during those times because I did not own an SVX. This is old news to a lot of folks here because it has been talked about at length. If you don't mind me asking, what do you think the ultimate exhaust would be on an SVX?
