so, they went off to the bed of someone's PU to use hose water to dissolve the salt from around the cylinder walls?

Belazona

Pretty cool. I need to get some picks of my semi closed. How hard is that stuff? Do you think it will provide good structural support or just improved gasket sealing?

This stuff is a metal based molecullar composite. There's a wide variety of applications and the stuff is strong enough to repair worn key beds and wollered out hydralic ram pin beds. The engineers said its expansion and contraction is minimal and the stuff is compatible with aluminum. They thought the application was well within the design of the product. Since my application involves shorts term trips of an hour or two at the most, I'm confident the stuff will work. I'm not sure about an every day driver. It's not cheap. Retail for the canisters pictured is 300 bucks and I used about 60% of the container. It's like working with peanut butter.

To answer your question Chuck, I'm hopin the stuff will stabilize the cylinder walls to aid in head gasket sealing. When I tore the motor down and took a close look at the cometic head gaskets, I noticed that the coating on the surface where the gaskets meet the deck was worn-off while on the cylinder side is was intact. My assumption is that the material is worn off because the cylinder walls are moving around. See pics. First pic is block side second is cyl head side.

It's a good bet that you are correct. I think that your solution should solve your problem. The 2.2T motors were always fully closed. You can bet there was a good reason for that. Factories don't usually go to that expense unless they have to. Are you going to stick with the 11 mm ARP studs now? I hope that my semiclosed deck works as well.

Headbolts

Have not given up on the 14mm bolts. I'm trying to find the most ecomomical way to do it. I may buy the kit from cobb tuning and then the shorter bolts from ARP. I'll keep you posted.

Very cool. I did the same to a Chevy Vega block in the late seventies. Worked well. Later, messing with cams, gears, etc, I overheated the block. The insert section remained intact.

Head Studs

I doubt you will really need the 14 mm head bolts. I've got a buddy running 11 mm on a 600 HP STi, sleaved with cometic head gasket. Still just a semi closed deck. We have 16 bolts, he's got 12. I don't know what kind of power you are planning to run, but I think your belzona should fix your cylinder mobility problem. It might be worth a try. You already have the 11 mm studs. I know its a pain to pull things apart and put them back on the bench.

head studs

I bit the bullet and ordered two sets of 14mm ARP 2000 studs. Sleeving will also help add stability to the cylinders. But, at this point, we'll see if the 14mm studs and belzona closed deck do the trick. Anyone else tried to run one if these engines over 15 pounds of boost?

interesting work you did tom.
Concerning closing the deck... how long have you been running on that material inside the engine? don't you think that heat will desintegrate it?

guys, check this supplier out. I think he has cool stuff especially for the svx (ever dealt with them tom?)

I don't know of anyone running more than 12 psi of boost. I think you are going to be good to go with your setup, and then some. Good Luck and thanks for your help. Its always good to see how far others are taking this motor.

We are all aware that cometic gaskets are available. Tom has even tried them, although they have leaked. Sleave wobble seems to be the culprit, not the gasket. That is why he did the belazona and I am semi closing the deck with welded inserts. That will hopefully stabilize the sleeves.
