I'd stay away from used....you never know what you're gonna get.

New or rebuilt is the way to go. Depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Why do you think you need a new one?

Hi!
I had car in for rear differential bushing replacement, over phone, service writer told me that steering rack "is falling out of car and is dangerous"
I just picked car up last night, didn't get to look under it yet. Steering feels fine, car is quiet on washboard surfaces (all new struts and mounts last year, along with swaybar bushings).
I trust the mechanics there (Branca's Super service, milford, CT) but the service writer who I spoke with may have mixed me up with another customer...
What are the symptoms of bad rack? I never had to replace a steering rack in any of my families cars (over 30 years,a lot of cars!)

Steering?

Hard to steer is the primary symptom of a bad rack. Also, could be bad fluid leaks, but that is sometimes hard to track down as the steering uses the same fluid as the tranny. Other than that check the boots on each end and the mounting points. Actually pretty simple to check visually for the "nearly falling off" description. If you are not losing fluid, the steering is good with no noise and the mounting bolts are tight----I would say you are good to go.

What Ihopp said.
I just repaired a rack that "needed to be replaced".
(Subaru estimate;$1475.71 & $79.95 to align)
for $8.40.
A new resavoir O-ring two hose clamps and a quart of trans fluid.
Check the mounts, inner and outer tie rod ends, and the leaking hose behind the pass side head.
I've seen ALOT of loose hose clamps and hard lines lately.
Good luck and let us know.

"falling out of car" doesn't sound realistic. The only way it could be falling out is if the mounting bolts came out...unlikely. If it were indeed "falling out" it should make major rattling noise and transmit vibration through the steering wheel.

If all is smooth and your fluid is at the proper level, sounds like you're good to go.
