Antenna
I just replaced my head unit, and was wondering how hard it is to change out the powered antenna for a non-powered one. there is not a switch built into my new stereo, so it can't put the existing antenna up and down.

My silver had a non-powered aftermarket antenna when I bought it. There was only a single retaining nut holding it in, and I'd think installing a new one would be very simple.

I love the new head unit. I hardly listen to the radio anyway.
I was mainly wondering how the powered antenna is wired in and how the non-powered ones are wired in. I need to know if i need to take out the power moter to put in the non-powered antenna.

The power antenna assembly was still in place on mine. The new mast attached with a butterfly-anchor sort of deal with a single nut tightened from the outside, and the lead from the antenna was plugged right into the stock lead.

Why dump a perfectly good antenna? You might want it if you ever install a new HU (or re-install the stock deck).
It's also nice to retract the antenna when you go through a car wash! I'd add a switch behind the center console near the back, connected to +12V accessory. Turn it on during those rare times that you need to hear the radio.

You could just disconnect it. There are two antennas on the car. One is in the rear wind screen.
Or you could get one of the stealth ones designed for retrofits on older cars which you lay under the rear shelf or similar. It can be a ***** to get the exterior retaining nut to let go on the stock antenna with out munging it up. |

Check the wiring diagram - the antenna only needs one wire and ALL new headunits should be able to control it - there (shouldn't) be anything special about that it... that i know of. There again the mast on mine is broken (stupid kids) so I haven't been able to try it out. |
