Hello there every one

I just purchased a 2006 ford mustang gt and will not drive it in the winters, I because of snow--I am planning to look at an awd subaru svx with semi low miles 80K; I looked at the carfaxr eport and every thing looks ok. my only concern is that every where that i've turned to look for information on the svx the problem that keeps popping up is the weak transmission? What better way to find out if the svx's come with weak transmissions then to ask ssubaru enthusiats. What do you all think about the transmissions that come in the svx--personally I have always liked the car its totally different and comes with a 3.3 flat six DOHC. Can you guys and gals please inform me how the transmissions have behaved on your svx's?

Thanks

Welcome to the site.

It's not that the transmissions are weak...they can handle high HP without breaking. The problem is that they overheat due to blockages in fluid flow and that's when the problems start.

If you can keep the temperatures down and the fluid flowing properly then the tranny should last a long time.

Another option is to swap in a manual transmission.

transmission

hey there earthworm thanks for responding. so should I check out the svx and see if the trasmission is fine? Should I immediatly look for a tranny cooler? How does one make sure if the fluids are reaching the tranny? could i find answers on a haynes or chiltons shop manuals?
if the transmission is bad i may still buy the vehilce does any one know know much a used tranny goes for or should I just get it rebuild?

Welcome to the site! As much as I love the SVX, I'd suggest you give the "I'm buying this to drive in the Winter" intent plenty of thought. While the SVX is an AWD vehicle, it also doesn't have much ground clearance. If you proceed with getting one for just winter use I'd suggest getting some 215/55 series snow tires on the stock rims to give yourself a little more clearance and traction.

thinking

yeah I am begining to think about it more I have found more tranny information that was very helpful on www.subaruSVX.com. I will look at the car carefully, I was not aware of the small number of svx's that were sold in the states and around the world making the repairs surely costly; I will try to ask the dealer every possible question I could ask about the SVX it seems like a semi complicated car--and that is true the svx does sit low.
what kind of milage does the svx get?

I have to agree with Bill, but maybe for different reasons. I think of a 'winter' car as a beater, and I just don't see the SVX as a reliable beater. I love mine dearly, and it's been reliable for me, but it's no Camry.

I actually store mine in the winter. I found that it was fantastic in snow (and I lived in VT when I bought it), but I don't want the conditions to continue to eat the car.

I might recommend an older Camry, Corolla, Legacy or Impreza. Each would be more reliable and more practical.

My daily driver is an outback and it is great in the snow. That is another one that I would suggest.
