Creaking noise during turning

Hi All,

My SVX is making noise near steering area when I turn the steering wheel towards all the way to left and right. It kind of sounds like creaking of hardwood floor. I can hear very clearly in the cabin but not really outside whether I open the hood or not. Noise is there both when parking and just idling. Did I ruin my steering column? Any idea how to find exactly where it's coming from? This started after it has been on rails for a while due to various work including timing belt and water pump. I don't think it is ps pump or belt. Thanks!

It is likely that its your front upper strut mount making the noise.

Noise from the power steering system, due to the presence of air in the fluid, is very hard to define. I was not convinced when I had strange noises, until I replaced the O ring on my car, which fixed it. This could be your problem and if so you can rejoice, as the fix is simple and inexpensive. Refer the how to section.

I get a 'crack' when i turn, often when its at speed and the weight shifts to the outside.

Thanks for the replies.
Mine never makes any sound on speed. Only during parking or not moving when I turn towards all the way. Since it makes sound when not moving, I thought it was not a strut? I recently changed oring but the power steering pump area does whine a little. PS whining sound is distinctly different from creaking sound I'm questioning about. I thought it was not the pump since this creaking is coming from behind the dashboard or near steering column is, I think.
I could do oring change and flush again.

I saw a post about sounds possibly due to something called "clock spring". Could this be damaged if a car is on a rail for a long time?

I had that same noise. It was my left shoulder joint.

Re: Creaking noise during turning

Hi, since I am actually facing the exact same issue like stated in this post:

- cracking (not squeesing) sound only while turning the wheels during stand still
- no increased force neccessary to turn the wheel
- no noise while driving
- steering fluid reservoir filled to max, no leaks)
- ball joint replaced about 2 years ago

I am most interested to learn if/how this issue got resolved or if there are any ideas on the root cause.

Thanks a lot!

Marcus
