You can even get more creative and make it voice activated or maybe an optical key.

OH! how about a numeric keypad, OR even better, biometric! thumbprint or retina scan! (thumbprint may be the only reasonable of the two, but retinal scan sounds fun)

I work at a computer store and I know this is a joke and all but thumb print scanners arent that expensive. It might actualy be possible to pull that one off.

That's a great idea! I just have to figure out how to install my flatbed scanner in the car and have someone help push my head down hard enough to get my eyeball flat on the glass.

Yes that sounds a bit hard Kuoh. How about fitting the scanner in the seat, you could do a rectumal scan a lot easier.

Harvey.

Yeah that might be easier, but mall security tend to frown upon people depantsing in their parking lot.

The thing is: optical keys, voice recognition, biometric scanners and combination keypads will do nothing to make the car more secure. It's like putting a big heavy padlock on a door that's made of thin cardboard. As Kuoh said, there are only 4 wires in the ignition harness and a car thief will know how to short them and bypass whatever front-end you have put in place.

Even cars with aftermarket alarms and immobilisers get stolen. When you look under the dash it's usually easy to see which wires have been diverted and you can just join them up the way they were originally. Such devices are really just an illusion of security and will not stop a thief that knows his trade.

I strongly suggest that you don't remove the steering lock. It takes a lot more effort to break a metal lock than to short a few wires. I have heard that it's even more difficult to break if you make sure to turn the wheel until it clicks every time you park.

oh, I was serious, I've priced biometric door locks, they are quite reasonable...

as to the security issue, I wasn't reallysuggesting it would make the car more secure, it would just make it more cool....

and to be fair if steering column locks actually worked the club never would have been invented... (I suppose we'd still need alarms to let us know when our stereo has been stolen.) the point is none of these things do anything except make stealing a car, or the contents of a car more fun and challenging for a car thief...
