That's what I was wondering. Maybe he meant to ask if there was a way you could tell just by looking at the car....some sort of obvious clue.

Look in the engine bay. You should see the ABS module (in the lower left corner if I remember correctly). ABS = AWD. no ABS = no AWD.

But to determine if it's working perfectly is harder...

all SVXs '96 and after are AWD, and all subarus '97 and after are AWD.

In 1995 the svx was produced in 2 different models, the L and the LSi. The LSi had everything included, awd, leather, sunroof, etc. The L had cloth, no sunroof, grey paneling and such. But in 1995 the L model had an optional "active safety package" which included AWD and ABS (maybe something else, not sure exactly). As far as I have seen all of the 1995 L svxs i have seen have had this package, but i'm sure that some do not.

I have a 1995 L/L model........and it has leather seats, AWD, ABS, SRS......I think the optional package was probably the leather...but I'm not sure either.

That's true, but only for the 95 models. In 94 you could get ABS without AWD.

The 95 L models only came with cloth seats. Your leather seats were added on by a previous owner.

hey speaking of...

what test would the shop have to run to determine whether or not the awd is functioning?

my awd was definitely not working when i bought the car. since having the transmision replaced though it seems to be.

There's a pressure test that can be done but I'm not sure the specifics.

The 94 FWD I have doesn't have the connector installed for a fuse in the FWD slot. (In the fuse box under the hood). The slot is there, but it's blank with nothing to hold the fuse.

I guess this would be another clue.

Jack up the front and hit the gas

The last time my car was in the shop, my mechanic warmed the new tranny fluid by raising all four tires just off the deck, starting the car, working through the gears and giving 'er the gas. That seems a sure and simple test.

I'd say it would be mighty easy to spin the fronts on an SVX with non-functioning AWD.

Here is a simple test that "el presidente" taught me. Park the SVX so that the front tires are just on a grass surface and the rear tires are on blacktop. Now give it a good shot of right-foot. If the AWD is working properly the rear traction will shoot you into the grass. If the AWD is not working you will stay in place while spinning your front tires.
