Teflon tape is not necessary. Brass on aluminum will provide a good seal.

I would get that belt off ASAP even if you don't replace it right away. You don't want it snapping and getting lodged anywhere. Good to hear that you were able to fix it inexpensively. It would be nice if all repairs were like that.

Took the belt off ..........man was it shot!! Turns out it looks like the idler pulley for it is seized rock solid. So that's the mystery ..........she's been running just like the day a got her .....minus the air conditioning

That's actually a fairly common failure. Several people on the board, including myself, have experienced the idler bearing lockup. Luckily, it's a cheap and easy fix. Unluckily for me, mine siezed up during the winter and threw the belt into the passenger side radiator fan. Since I didn't use the AC during the winter and didn't make a habit of checking under the hood, I didn't notice it till summer and it damaged the fan motor.

Moral of the story? When your SVX starts to make noise and smell funny, check for problems right away.

Same thing just happened to me. I used this thread to fix my issue. I replaced the bearing on the ac pulley. This should help for future reference for 92 models.
