I learned to drive stick on an 88 944 turbo S. I never realized it was such a rare car. Great drive though. The one i was driving had a broken roof latch so it rattled alot, and I wasn't a fan of the stereo, but then again who needs it with a car like that. Same color as the one you drove too. Not a fan of that particular color. Does it come in red? I could go for that.

Yep, Guards Red. I'm not usually a fan of red. It can only be worn by certain beauties and happens to look particularly stunning on the 944.

And yes, it is an excellent auto-x car.
Thanks Eddie. I have been researching these a LOT lately and I am very interested. I have decided to keep the SVX a bit longer to save up for a good turbo model. I think I can get a really nice 87 turbo for around 10.

Don't you remember the movie "Sixteen Candles"? It had a beautiful red 944. My favorite is the 928S4 and I continually hound poor Alan to death over it! The 928 looks awesome in Black. In a perfect world I'd have a black 928S4 and a red 944S2 or Turbo S.

That was a pretty cool story Always wondered how those front engined Porsche's drove... Something about a Porsche with the engine in the front that just seems wrong to me.... ... It's like some weird kid in school trying to be normal or something...

Still, I'd love to actually drive one so I can form my own oppinion based on an actual drive

At the time of their production, they were Porsche's best handling car. They still are pretty high up on their list. The transmission is mounted on the back (like Corvettes, and I believe Vipers), so weight distribution is near 50/50, which is better than even a 911 Turbo or GT2.

You have to drive it to know what it's like. Just reading about it does it little justice.

they are still raced very competitively. a guy on the forums i used to frequent drove his 928 (less than $40,000 into it, including the car itself) to the track, beat the factory, trailered-in Porsche RSR factory racecars costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, then drove it home, with the radio and AC on.

i taped a race he was in on Speedvision (remember that?), and he had the stock exhaust on! the announcers were talking it all up, how quiet is was.

I would love to eventually do that with my SVX...

I already have plans to get a built motor 1+ yrs from now when ECUTune starts offering them - with a raised compression, increased displacement and hotter camshafts. All N/A power!!!

Anyone consider a 968? It's the last generation of the 924/944 series. It has a 928-like nose and was available in a convertible. They look sweet.

Those 968's were sweet but lost the much sought after turbo motor...

Here's a good comparo review of one:

there were 4 factory 968 turbo RS's made, in addition to the many "homemade" varieties.

Callaway also made 2 turbo 928's. yum!

There was a 968 Turbo S. Just never made it into the US. uses the same 2.5L 4cyl Turbo found in the 944 Turbo S, but read the specs on it... Much higher output.

At the beginning of my story, I make mention of the 968 Turbo S. That was no typo. It is my 2nd favorite Porsche.

Quote from that site:

"As you can see, this thing is for real. Unfortunately, the day might not ever come when you see this car easing up beside you at a red light. Even though it is completely street legal, Porsche only produced 15 of them. They weren't about to offer a cheaper model that could outperform the 928 and 911!"

Mmmm.
