Check the bushings that support the rear differential. There are two of them located between the diff and the muffler. Both of mine were torn to pieces and I could move the diff around easily. If I was at home I'd post pictures, but I'm at work so pics will have to wait.
I had thought it was the transmission support that was damaged, and as it was being replaced, I noticed those bushings were bad too. Replacing the the tranny support solved some of the clunking, but it was in much better shape than the rear bushings, and a few days later when those came in and got replaced the clunking was eliminated completely.

reverse thunk
For shock going from N to R, the ATSG troubleshooting chart suggests the following in order of most likely culprit;
Valve sticking Faulty 4A accumulator Deterioration of ATF. I think the first two are located in the pan and would not require pulling the tranny to have your transmission specialist cure the problem. Joe [As above, bad support bushes does also create this problem]

forward thunk...
Again, the troubleshooting chart suggests the following in order of most likely....
Deterioration of ATF Faulty N-D accumulator Valve sticking Faulty TCU Again, the two middle ones are in the cassette in the oil pan, and more easily fixable by somone who knows what they are doing. Joe

Might not be tranny
Even though it is probably transmission-related, make sure you check out your cv axles. A faulty outer joint would cause a similar clunking noise to the one you are describing.

Do you happen to have the part numbers for those Differential Bushings?
I was under the impression that those bushings were an integral part of the differential mounting subframe, and therefore not replaceable. Jason.

They aren't listed as a replacement part on 92's but seem to be on 94's
