New Project
My dad and I are thinking about doing a complete restoration of a '72-'74 BMW 2002. I am really excited about this. Neither of us have ever done this before but are both pretty capable. I hope to keep the exterior stock and mod it with things from the era. I hope to make this a 160 hp beast!
Any thoughts/opinions or anyone with '02 knowledge? I would like to build a motor with the E12 head, 9.5:1 Mahle pistons, Dual sidedraft DCOE 40 webers (drool), Schrick 292 cams and electrical upgrades. I am getting way far ahead of myself, we haven't even started yet! But hey, I can't help it!

Hrm....
I'd suggest not using the BMW engine. It's outdated, and parts are $$$. Instead, use a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder from a dodge stratus or minivan. Yep. A big four cylinder. It has about 150hp stock, and 170 ft lbs of torque. With minor bolt ons it'll get 200hp to the wheels and 200 ft lbs of torque, and still get 30+mpg. It's also an aluminum block, 4 valves/head, etc etc. (modern design) Look into it. - Rob |

Yeah, I have thought of other engines. Even an E30 engine will fit with some mods. I think it would be more fun to make power with the original motor though. The '02 motor is wonderfully versatile and sounds amazing! A lot stronger than any dodge (mitsubishi) motor. I don't want to stray tooooo far from the original design.

KEEP THE BMW MOTOR!!!
I can't stress this enough, the bmw M10 (stock 4 cylinder) was perhaps the most advanced engine of it's day and was used untill 1984, it has Hemi heads and has a huge following, click my web page (WWW button at the bottom of this message) and you'll see some of my 2002's, sadly I don't have a running car right now. If you really want more power the M20 engine out of a 325i would make your car a screamer, but it takes some serious modifications. A friend has a 2002 reddy to accept a 180+ HP engine, it'll be a ripper!

I have always respected the twenty-oh-two. The little bimmers used to run SCCA B Sedan class with the GTV Alfa and the Cortina Lotus. Truly great saloon car racing! I recently saw a website somewhere on a twenty-oh-two project car with a newer BMW engine transplant, simliar to the idea floated by NapaBavarian. Depends on whether you're going for a strict period restoration or your own unique expression of a twenty-oh-two in the twenty-first century. Cool project, keep us posted, I'm jealous.
