Revised strut mounts for 92s?! Anyone?!
"Knocking noise from the front end is caused by defective strut mounts. Revised mounts are available for replacement. (1992)"
From this site: http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/u...0071990104.htm My front end makes noise, it might be something in the struts.... what part number are they talking about? I'm taking my car to the dealership on Friday... so.... - Rob |

Rob,
Have no idea about the mount, but there was a recent thread on greasing the stabilizer bar got rid of a clunk. I had to replace my bushing for the right side of the bar as it sounded pretty bad. Certainly much cheaper than a strut if you got a place to raise the car and check it out. BTW, went to your cardomain site from the other thread...give 'em hell |

The modified strut mounts are the only ones available from Subaru now.

The funny thing about that site is that it states $1015 for a replacement tranny. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Another potential source for noise in the front end is loose caliper mounting pins. Tightening these down has eliminated front end clunks on many people's cars. Replacing the strut mounts did it for my car.

newer stut mount design
Subaru changed the strut mount design during the production of the 92MY cars (I think it was around 11/91). Just about everyone here has the new design already, and those who don't will need to replace both at the same time in order for the car to sit correctly. The part numbers for the new style are the same for the old style but don't worry about getting the wrong ones: the old style mounts have been gone a long time now.

Strut Mounts
I have a knocking noise 1992 SVX , left front. I took it in and they could not find the cause. I thought it sounded like a ball joint but now after reading this I believe the strut mount could be the problem. Is it difficult to reair ? Is the mount welded in place or fastened w/ nuts& bolts? How high up,can one see it if it was jacked up? I would welcome coments on my questions and thank-you in advance for any info. that may help me with this problem.
Happy Trails, Ralph

I have the same problem with my 95. I've had two techs look at it, and they both can't see anything wrong. Their best guess is a worn strut mount. A new mount, if I remember correctly, is about $100. I've decided to just live with it.

My front end makes noise, it might be something in the struts
For what it's worth, I tackled a similar problem last year:
after replacing just about everything I could think of, (why not I figure, I've replaced everything else!) the clunking turned out to be the front sway bar end links....which were totally shot. Good Luck! Tim '92 Pearlie....just noticed a speck of rust forming..... |
