Just bought,Trans question
Just bought 92 LSL,original owner-original tranny. Want to put synthetic trans fluid in,but, worried that it could create a problem after so many miles. Any experiences with this? Has 150,000 miles
Thanks,Jim |

Wow!
Nice going Jim.
150000 on original tranny . With so many sad stories on here, nice to know it can be done. People use fully synthetic, particularly after a rebuild, because it is more resistant to heat, and the SVX tranny builds a lot of heat. Drawback would be, it tends to get past seals. My advice would be, after 150K miles, leave well alone. Just put in the best Dexron III you can get, no point looking for trouble. Others may differ, but that's my view. Joe

Thanks, that's kinda what I was thinking at this point. I work at A Nissan dealership that has a flush machine. I think I'll do that first and investigate coolers and filter kits.

Jim
Take care with the flushing. Your car is 92, and probably still has original radiator. The ATF oil cooler in the corner of the rad has a "turbolator" in it, a coarse wire mesh designed to get the oil to flow turbulently, which aids cooling, defeats surface layer effects. Trouble was, as material flaked from the friction parts in the tranny, they tended to collect at this filter, and reduce ATF flow. Not too clever! General advice around here is not to reverse flush if the car is pre-94, and still has the mesh. If you disconnect both lines to the tranny, feed and return, then flush away, just make sure you remove any gunk you may dislodge from this filter. Joe

Thanks for the heads up! Can the mesh be removed,or is that not advisable?

Welcome Jiml!!
Never too many miles to install a real external cooler. Do a search. Lot's of different installation locations. Well, not a lot but set aside some time to read. There will be a ton of posts about it. Also, if you look down in front of the engine compartment on the drivers side you should see an external tranny filter. When you make the change you'll want to change that as well.
Welcome aboard, enjoy and get ready for alot of questions. Just got back from a car wash and was grilled about the car from an employee. Randy ii |

i wouldn't touch it, even putting on a cooler. i think if it's the original trannie, it will go. then you can put the cooler on with the rebuild on the trannie. i question the expense or even the time in putting a cooler in yourself now as it may not gain you much if any on the life of the trannie.

Do a good clean and flush with the pipes not connected to the tranny, and don't worry about it. Put on an external cooler like everybody says, put on an external filter if it has not already been done, and you will have done the best that can be done. Joe
