Question Price because of oil type

Just wondered if you would pay more for a car that had been using synthetic oil from the start instead of regular oil.

unless it was installed by the factory, i thought it wasn't a good idea to put in synthetic oil until 5k-10k miles are on the engine (heard several variations on this arguement). i can't remember what the reasoning was, though. anyone?

besides, how are you gonna PROVE it was run only on synthetic its whole life?

I used synthetic (amsoil) and wasn't impressed. Seemed like the engine ran rougher and the oil didn't last any longer than conventional stuff.
Given this, I don't think it does any good to the car thus it would be a waste of money to pay more.

Oil

Hi oil freaks, First, let me say that how often you change oil is probably more important than what kind of oil you use. Second, some of these cars were made in late 1990. Some of these cars have way more than 100,000 miles on them. These are old cars. By and large the engines in these cars are original to the cars they are in now. My 1992 SVX has 90,000+ miles and I have started to use Valvoline "MAX LIFE". Although I have used synthetic from the time I got my SVX in August of 1997, when it only had 31,000 miles, I started using MAX LIFE oil in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. For Winter I sill use synthetic for the cold flow benefits. I change oil and filter every 3000 miles and use a Mobil 1 Filter. Take care, BOBB

Another important thing is to use a good oil filter and change it every time you change oil. Believe it or not, some people don't.

I also change my oil every 3,000 miles, so I don't think using a synthetic oil would be that much of an advantage.

So far, all 3 choices of the poll are equal. I know that this is a very personal thing, but it is still interesting.

I'm not voting in this poll, but I'll give you this opinion:

'Oil changed every 3,000 miles,' as promised by a seller, means very little to me unless the owner has documentation. 'All receipts' means a lot more to me thant 'oil changed every XXXX miles.' It shows to me that the car was really cared for.

Significant Technical Input
I agree with Nick. The reciepts represent the facts. Synthetic oil changes might then make a difference to me, but only as an enticement, not as an incentive to pay more. I see too many people spend $$ on some things and not enough (or any) on the items a car truly needs. "I can spend the extra money on the Whophlungpoo spark plugs and get the oil change a couple months from now..."

WEll, considering I don't plan on selling my SVX, Im not keeping receipts. I change my oil every 5-7,000 miles, and the filter. I always use synthetic, and always use Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is pretty much superior to any other type of oil, I remember reading a lot about it on the net before, and it really is some of the best stuff you can get.

With the new oils and new engines, many auto makers are suggesting that oil be change every 7500 miles instead of 3000 that we are used to. I do mine every 3000-5000 when ever I have time. My dad, who buys cars for the UN also confirms the 7500 - 10,000 marker as well. One of these days, we'll have cars that we need to change oil once a year to never at all.

Or if you have 4 cars in the family it means you can change the oil every 12k and have receipts for one car. None of the places I've gotten oil stuff at puts the filter size on it. Makes it hard to tell which I bought it for so I simply stopped and now just try to buy by the case with all the oil filters for a car. Wish I had the receipts though. Not that I'll ever sell. It is just more believable with receipts.

I thought that the 7500k factory suggestion was only for highway driving?
I guess in Europe they change their oil every 10k, but then how long do they expect their cars to last?
About 100k miles.

You do know that european cars last longer than the US made cars right?

UN keeps their cars for about 7 years max and crush them. Most are crushed at about 5 years. SVX is so far the car with the most amount of miles I have owned. over 200k miles is a lot. One reason why I need to find a good 96-97 SVX once of these days.
