AT cooler recommend?

Can anyone recommend for me a good sized, easy to install transmission cooler? A vendor for the cooler would be appreciated also.

I'm on trans #4 and don't think I can afford another so I need to make this one last.

Thanks in advance.

John Sullivan,

It's a B&M cooler. I don't know the exact model number, but it's either the one for 16,000 or 19,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
Check the message archives for the right model.

It's mounted between the radiator and the AC condenser. Don't forget to add the ATF filter kit and use synth. ATF, which has a higher temp rating than petroleum based ATF.
Good Luck.

I agree with Larry.

BTW, I think at least three "brands" sell the same cooler. May be wrong, but the stacked plate models from B&M, Imperial, and Hayden all look the same to me. Look for something 3/4" thick, I forget the length/width sizes.

I pass this along in case a local parts house has one brand but not the others. There was some talk on the forum in the past that the stacked plate coolers bypass parts of the cooler during cold weather - a kind of self regulating thermostat - but I have never tested mine to see if that was true - besides it's never really that cold here, so....

I have NO auxilary cooler on my '92. I do have the filter kit.
This SVX sits in the driveway overnight. I leave for work in the mornings around 5:30 AM. This past winter with temps. below 35 deg. F (just last week) the tranny took about 5 miles to warm up enough to engage overdrive. The last 3 of those miles are on the interstate (I-95N) at 60-70 mph. I also notice that the tires take a 'set' every night that takes about 1-2 miles to smooth out. All the tires on all our SVXi (I now prefer SVXi to SVXes as the plural form of SVX) are classified as 'ultra-high perfromance all-season' by Tire Rack. I have 3 different brands. I have to find out how the Yoko tires that are mounted on the '94 are classified.

I hope this answers some questions.

I have a 14,000lb tube and fin cooler mounted in front of the condensor so it gets the colder air. It's in series after the radiator on the driver side and drops the the AFT temperature 15 degrees. I use the a/c in the summer and this arrangement doesn't blow hotter air onto the tranny cooler. I also have a diverter valve to bypass the cooler in the winter and the external AFT filter.

I had my B&M 19kGVW cooler installed by my mechanic and he placed it in series but before the radiator (also between the radiator and condenser). I asked hm to install it in series but did not specify the order. This weekend I changed the oil and tranny fluid (6 qts of Mobil1), and noticed the order.

This would "air cool" the fluid which is relatively hot, and then "water cool" down to operating temperature. Since air cooling is not as efficient, it is better to have the higher temperature difference between fluid and air. This set up would extract more heat from the fluid than if set up with the radiator first, followed by the auxilary cooler, in my opinion.

I ran it this way all winter in NJ and had no adverse effects on driveability. My MPG dropped a bit since it takes longer for the fluid to heat up.
