Re: parting out silver '92
I have been looking around at a couple different sources for a 4.44 transmission, I'm looking at this one on Car-part.com that has 55,000 for $700, it's been sitting for a few years the guy said, what kind of condition do you guys think it's in? plus I would need to still buy the differential.
Who's the guy on here that sells the 4.44 kits? Wasn't it 1986nate? or is it you svxfiles? At this point, I'm just waiting till I can clear enough space in the garage and the swap will begin. Should I put an external transmission cooler on the 4.44 transmission? Last edited by Saxman; 09-18-2013 at 09:04 PM. |

$700 for a working 55K trans is very reasonable. Does the place with the trans have a 55k rear as well? The transmission cooler is always a good idea IF you are in an area without snow. Hayden cdoolers are as cheap as $30.00. PS: Read the 4.44 link in my signature. You SHOULD be able to get a 4.44 rear differential for about $100.00

Re: parting out silver '92
That's what I thought, it's also very close to me so I don't have to pay for shipping. When I talked to the guy on the phone he said he does have the differential, I'm pretty sure, from the same car, if not then from another Outback, I'll call him again tomorrow to make sure.
He wants "about $300" for the differential, is there any way I can negotiate that price down? I also already checked out the transmission # as well and it matches 3 of the ones already swapped into the cars of people on this forum. What kind of stuff am I going to have to replace on the transmission before putting it in my car? I.e. main seals, etc... The guy said I should use all the solenoids off of my transmission, but I know for a fact duty solenoid C has failed, and I think the other two have been boiled in ATF long enough that they aren't good anymore. What's the best source for new solenoids? Should I even bother? Last edited by Saxman; 09-18-2013 at 09:19 PM. |

Re: parting out silver '92
Also, is it smarter to try to lift the engine and transmission out together? or should I just lower the transmission out of the bottom? I have an engine lift so I could do both.
The engine has 140,000 and it runs beautifully, the valve cover gaskets have already been replaced, and I have no idea what condition the timing belt or water pump are in or when they were last replaced. |

Re: parting out silver '92
My 4.44 was out of a 96 and had 82K on it. It was already removed from the car and cost either $550 or $600 (I can't quite remember), the matching rear differential was $100. I would say yes the price of the transmission is very good, considering the low miles however the price on the rear differential is not good at all.
I had a almost new Solenoid C in my failed SVX transmission that I had put into the 4.44 at the time of the swap. You can order them from SubaruParts.com for about $100.
