Rear Speaker Replacements

I have the rear interior panels out of the car right now to work on the suspension. While there, I want to replace the rear deck speakers.

They just needs to replace stock ones, does not have to be better than the factory ones. I don't want to modify the rear deck or have to do anything to the rear deck trim cover/speaker grills. I'm going to continue to use the stock stereo.

Any plug and play options out there?

There won't be anything truly plug and play. You will have to splice in wires for anything other than stock.

Sorry, I should be more specific. I'm not concerned about the electrical part (could I just salvage any plugs or hardware from the speakers that are being replaced and use for the new speakers?).

I'm more concerned that the replacements fit in the stock location without any drilling or cutting.

Basically any modern 6X9 will fit with no drilling or such required.

I second that i've replaced the rear speakers with 6X9 Alpines without any fitment issues whatsoever

i also put some new 6x9's in the back of mine just a few days ago , with a bit of fiddling and a 90* screw driver http://www.electronicplus.com/images/products/P340.jpg
it can be done reasonably easy
as for wires just get some speaker wire and four 6mm male spade two 6mm and two 3mm female spade connectors and crimp them on

You can also use a 1/4" ratchet with a phillips bit and adapter. That's what I did.

i kind of did that too but my ratchet is broken
it unscrewed them fine but wont do them back up

Update.. and thanks to all for the tips!

The car came back with the brake and suspension work completed. I'll start another thread on what was done , but a thanks goes out to Renner Motorsports and Glenn AKA "Rojorocket" for much of this work!

So I was able to install a pair of $45 Pioneer 6x9 speakers. They bolted right up but I had to mount them *under* rather than on top of the rear deck. They were too tall and interfered with the trim cover. I used strips of foam between the speakers and the deck to keep any buzzing down. I bought a tiny little ratchet with several bits and it worked perfectly for this job!

I am also replacing the padded mats that are glued to the underside of the deck trim cover. The factory just glues pieces of the doorcard/nterior padded vinyl that is used throughout the interior.

I bought a roll of mass loaded vinyl and a roll of closed cell foam. I sandwiched both together using spray 3M rubber adhesive. I used the original pieces as templates and cut out the new pices from the MLV and foam sheet I made. I then glued that to the underside of the deck.

The rear deck will get several strips of Dynamat as well as under the rear windows and the wheel wells in the trunk area. Additionally I am going to install Dynamat around the area where the struts mount and then install the MLV/foam layers over the strut mounts (making a new foam "box" for the top mounts), then under the rear windows and along the wheel wells in the trunk. I'm just looking to reduce road noise a bit.

Nice job David, and thanks for the shout out. I'm literally dying to hear how your shop remedied the "clunk" in the rear. Funny too, I found your missing small pad for the rear shelf stuck onto something after we were all finished, and you were long gone. Can't recall what, but still have it. Just didn't think you'd tear it all apart to put it back in there. Looks like you came up with a superior pad anyway.

Just curious, but have you had any trouble with the rear speaker covers cracking? I dismantled the ones from my '93 and JB welded the cracks, but on reassembly the metal mesh pulled them out of whack, recracking them. Hate to pay dealer price for replacements.
