Main radiator fan not working
While parked for 20 minutes with the a/c on, the temp gauge started to go up to about the 9:30 position. As that has never happened before, I turned off the car and noticed some bubbleing in the coolant overflow resevior. When the car is moving, the temp gauge is always where it has always been, 8:30 to 9:00. I checked the radiator fan operation today with the engine hot, a/c on, and the auxillary fan on the drivers side was working, but the main fan was not working. Both fan fuses are intact, though the right hand fuse tabs were slightly corroded, but the fan still did not work after cleaning the prongs. I tapped the top of the relays but the fan did not come on. I have the shop manuals, but can not find a trouble shooting guide for the fan and associated electrics.
Any advice? Bill |

Re: Main radiator fan not working
try swapping the relays to see if the other fan will come on, then put power directly to it. if it's dead you better fix the corrosion in the circuit because that could have contributed to it's death.

Re: Main radiator fan not working
Check the 10A A/c fuse in the underhood panel. I had this same problem.
Also, if you are in need of a fan because yours is burned out, I have one which I won't need.PM me if you want to/need to buy it. Good luck.

Re: Main radiator fan not working
I will try those things. How do I put power directly to the fan?

Re: Main radiator fan not working
you can put power directly to fan a couple ways. if you have some lengths of wire you can unplug the connector and apply power and ground directly to it. if not you can stick something small (like the end of a fuse or tip of a screwdriver) into the place where the relay sits and apply power from the battery using a bent up close hanger. look in the wiring diagram to see which pin goes to the fan, which supplies power, and which two are the controlling circuit. if you have a voltmeter you could check out the whole circuit easily.

Re: Main radiator fan not working
I used your suggestions and and the problem is solved. Turns out the corroded fuse was actually inoperative. Cleaned up the recepticle and put in a new fuse and all is well.
Thanks everyone. Bill |
