Front U Joint?

I need to replace it - where the heck can I get one, and what do we call it in SVX world? The only thing I can find is the driveshaft, which is not broken. Do I have to buy the whole thing or???

Re: Front U Joint?

Unfortunately the U-Joints in the SVX were not designed to be serviceable or changed. However, someone thought a way around that. I haven't changed the ones in the SVX, but I have changed the ones in my 240SX which are the same part and so should be the same process. Be warned, it's not a quick job.

Here is a link to a site that sells them. RUJ-10 is the one you want.

If you get a shop to change these for you, speak to the tech and ask if they've done import style staked in U-Joints before.

As an alternative, if you can be without the car for a little while remove the driveshaft and bring it to a good driveshaft shop. They will be able to fix you up properly.

Re: Front U Joint?

What's the symptom of what you are experiencing that you need a U-joint? Does it feel like a clunk when you hit the gas?

Wink Re: Front U Joint?

Yeah. First it started shaking when I took off from a stop, then started shaking most of the time. If you punched it, the most god awful clunk came out from right under the arm rest. My mechanic friend and I crawled under it, and where the driveshaft goes in to the front u joint, you can see where it is off center - the metal is wearing off of the front u joint. So it is in the garage until further notice.................. nothing new there!!!

Re: Front U Joint?

Do you have any other ideas? This car is in such nice shape - no leaks, no electrical problems at the moment - - - - so I am trying to keep it that way!!!

Re: Front U Joint?

Ya when i did my 5spd swap the guy at the driveshaft shop said that they were not designed to be serviced, just replaced with a new driveshaft because these things are pressed/clamped in(thats why there are no C-clips) In order to change the u-joint the old one will need to be drilled out and the the process be annoying. he said it was gonna cost about 4-500 so i just paid 550 for a new driveshaft to be made with bigger beefier U-joints that are serviceble and u can change in like 15mins. (GM SUV u-joint) and they are only like $15 each.

In the end i think its worth it to get a 1 piece driveshaft made cause u dont have to worry about the carrier bearing wearing out and those are also another expense

and apparently this was my 1,001th post!
