Code pulling without OBDII
I just bought a 94 SVX LSI and the check engine light is on. Now the last owner of the vehicle said that a Subaru Dealer told her that the knock sensors, o2 sensors, and cat. converters needed to be replaced. Now I am a technician at a non-subaru dealer, and it seems to me like the all those sensors was just a shot-gun diagnosis to try and fix something so I want to pull the codes myself. I had a toyota that was pre-OBDII and I could cycle the key a certain way and the check engine light would flash and it would tell me codes that way. Does the SVX have anything similiar? Or are the knock sensors, cats, and o2 sensors common enough where maybe they do need to be replaced. It has 103,4xx miles on it, and I plan on replacing the timing belt, plugs and wires on it, is there anything else that I should look at around that mileage. Any assistance on this would be appreciated, thank you.
P.S. I just bought the car yesterday, and I already love it. SVX is awesome. |

Re: Code pulling without OBDII
The How-To Documents link at the top right of the home page has a wealth of information.
Start here to see how to check the codes. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/33055.pdf Once you have recorded the codes, go to this document to find out what each code means. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/25335.doc Welcome to the Network! .

What wires? I suspect you already know that it does not have the old spark plug wires that were known to go bad. I would do the codes and replace the knock sensors if they still indicate at least one is bad, the timing belt and plugs. Then, see how things go. I bet that will not only fix it but do some preventative maintenance at the same time. You can buy the knock sensors on Ebay for a better price than the dealer. You can also do a search on here and see where the how to has been discussed. You only have to remove the alternator to get to them. No special tools required. Just my opinion. Lee
