my christmas present (to myself)

Well let's start out by saying that I have a very generous boss. He felt that I worked hard last year, and that I should be rewarded financially. Without his contribution I would not have been able to afford this, and I just wanted to give credit where it was due. I've wanted to do this for quite some time, but could never justify spending the money on it.

Ever since I've had the SVX it's bothered me that I had no security system, keyfob, anything remote to work with the car. I'm not in a high crime area at all (normally I keep the car unlocked at night on the street) but I wanted something incase I went to an area that wasn't so safe. Also, I've had a hankering for a remote start system for quite some time now. The convenience of not having to run out to my car to start it in 20* below weather is VERY appealing to me, and I wanted something that could also do the simple functions of remote lock, unlock.

My answer... The Viper 5701 security system.

Had it installed today at a local custom shop "Auto Toyz" in Coralville, Iowa.

All I have to say is... Wow, this thing is so cool. I feel like a kid just playing with it, lol. It has so many options that I never would have even thought of, but after I read through the manual it all makes sense! The option I like the best is "turbo timer!!!" FTW!!

Anyway, it has 1000ft. range, confirming keypad (so it lets me know when it unlocks, locks, starts, etc..) Plus a MYRIAD of other features like the aforementioned turbo timer, valet mode, inside car temperature display, remote start time remaining, remote rear defrost controller, and the list goes on and on.

Total cost was $673.24 out the door. Not cheap, and I know this same system can be had for less, but I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" and this is something I could have installed myself, but prefer having the peace of mind that if something goes wrong with it, I can take it back to someone else and have warranty work done on it. Having installed things like this before I didn't want to have to get the runaround everytime I had a question about something.

Auto Toyz is a pretty cool place, I've bought other things there before, had windows tinted, etc... and I had full confidence in their staff and product line. I've heard nothing but good things about Viper electronics so I decided to go for it.

Anyway, just thought I'd share, because like all of you... I'm pumped when I get new toys for my car! hahah

Stay warm everybody!

p.s. Here's the car the system is protecting.

and my favorite picture of the car...

Your car is so nice, I wish my finish looked nearly that good.

Well, thanks I appreciate it. It was the day of a car show though, and I own a detailing business, so of course I had to have it looking nice!

Re: my christmas present (to myself)

I'm a big fan of the viper units. I have the older version: the xv791. My favorite addon is the proximity motion sensor. My one pet peeve is that the antenna range is shortened when installed on the front windshield due to the titanium oxide coating. I ended up moving mine to the rear drivers side window.

Nice work.

I hope to see that car in person on the Iowa roads sometime... I go back and forth to eastern Iowa occasionally...

That car is just plain HOT.

The only thing I would add, would be a sweeping red light in the clear grille segment, maybe even hooked up as an alarm status indicator.

If Knight Rider had been made 10 years later than it was... that is what KITT would have looked like.

Re: my christmas present (to myself)

I also have an old Viper remote starter and alarm, which has served me well. I bought the car with it installed, so I don't know the purchase price. The range is fairly limited, so I can't start the car from inside my school, but otherwise it does the job very well. I would love to step up to that system.

One comment though: With mine I have an alarm system which works (open the door with it armed and it will start screaming at you), but the power locks don't work. I believe I checked the fuse a long time ago, but can't remember for certain. Would the Viper interfere with the power locks? My car didn't come with the factory keyless entry. (Canadian car)

You have to get the window module to do it, but it has 5-7 available channels for addons you can add.
