Gid'ay Huck, if it was a solenoid, it would turn both shift solenoids off and default to 3rd gear. You can be sure it is the band that is not working. It is used in 2nd and 4th.

Harvey.

Re: 2nd and 4th out on 4EAT

No solenoids, the band is gone. The band piston has alot of travel and I have never seen one fixed by adjusting. That doesn't mean it can't ever fix one, as I am sure someone will chime in having fixed theirs but If you've seen this trans apart you'd see what I am talking about. If the band has slipped even a little bit it will have destroyed it as the clutch material is very thin. The band would have to be way out of adjustment to get it to slip, and the only way I can see that happening is because someone built it and didn't adjust it properly. If the fluid is black, you can bet it will need the band and drum, as the drum will be scored from the the band attempting to hold it with no lining material on it. Also, I would look into why the band is slipping, and the answer to that question will likely be because there is not enough line pressure to hold the clutch drum on accel in 4th at low speed. Time for a reman trans or to go through it and replace piston seals, linings, and solenoids, and take a good hard look at the pump and make darn sure it's putting out enough pressure. Before I did anything I would check line pressure and compare it to specifications.
