will 4eat front pinion fit 5mt?

i REALLLLY want to keep my 4.44 gears!
but i also want to swap in a 5mt!

i figure the 5mt from something OTHER than a WRX would be the way to go...i understand that the WRX has the front step-down gearing (or step-up?)...

but that the other 5mt's do not?

(i'm thinking legacy turbo donor car...unless there is a better non-wrx alternative?)

the question is:

can i yank the front pinion from my 4eat (4.44) and install it (with the rest of the front diff) into a 5mt?

indeed...will the 4eat diff even fit in a 5mt at all?

or..........

is there a better way for me to achieve 4.44 final drive with a manual transmission?

just wondering.....

Re: will 4eat front pinion fit 5mt?

Subaru did make some AWD 4.44 manual transmissions.
But the overdrive ratio is higher, making them very high winding.
This link should help.

Re: will 4eat front pinion fit 5mt?

thanks tom !!

and thanks svxfiles!!

ok then...now the question is:

which is "better"....a push type clutch?
or pull type...?

which is easier/more common to source?

the tall 5th gear is no biggie....this is for the rally-beastie...
so i'll likely not be using 5th gear anyway
(if i do, then i'm going WAAAAAAAAAAYYYY too fast !!!)
lol

Look in that folder...I think that is the list of manual trannys...and the only US cars with a 4.44 MT is teh turbo Baja, and Turbo Forester....

Your Baja, probably has the same tranny as a RS which has a lower 5th then a standard Legacy 5-speed...

Re: will 4eat front pinion fit 5mt?

I'm going by this chart:
http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:...ient=firefox-a

Which shows only the Turbo Baja, and Turbo Forester (in the US) got 4.44, all others are either 4.11 or 3.90s....
