In addition, there's numerous other smaller problems, minor mechanical and appearance stuff (fading black plastic, the one where it says "twin turbo" on the VR-4, as well as nasty bubbles in the vinyl-like material that covers the inside of the doors). But that's just my personal experience.
The engines are interference design so it sucks when you break a timing belt, but thats the risk you take when you don't change it at the scheduled time or skip out on replacing the tensioner. I don't see how it would warrant a tranny replacement though. All cars have their quirks but on a whole they are good cars.

The timing belt/engine repair and the tranny repair were separate incidents. The tranny failed about 6 months before the timing belt.

As for the timing belt, it prematurely failed because the water pump froze. Both were being replaced at the proper times, but the water pump just went out, and the timing belt broke because of it. As for the interference design, I knew about that. My dad insisted that it was unlikely there was engine damage, but I insisted he have it checked nonetheless, because of the engine design, and they found the damage then.

Now, for some reason, I always assumed that most engines were interference design, so that when the timing belt broke, it would likely cause havoc within the engine. I know the SVX is a non-interference design, but what other kinds of cars are non-interference as well?

gates website has a pdf file showing which cars are/aren't interference.
http://www.gates.com/downloads/downl...older=brochure

I will attach it to this message (214kb)
It lists the DOHC 2.5L suby engine as non-interference, I always thought this was the one interference engine from subaru.
