Re: front wheels losing traction

I wasn't so worried about my diff exploding. I just didn't know if the very act of driving the car in wrong-wheel drive mode was going to damage or excessively wear something. I'll call subaru on the part tomorrow and probably change it out either one night this week, or on the weekend. Is that solenoid something generic to all the auto trannies that they are likely to have in stock, or am I going to have to wait a while while they order one?

Re: front wheels losing traction

Well I got the solenoid and gaskets today, and I'll be putting it in tonight. Anything I should look out for when changing this thing, or is it pretty straight-forward?

Re: front wheels losing traction

Hey BLENDERHEAD, do you have the part#s for the Duty C solenoid and gaskets. I went to my local Subaru dealer today and the parts guy had never heard of a Duty C solenoid and couldn't find it in his system. He also couldn't order the $1.43 power steering O-ring although he did give me the price.

If you go to the dealer you probably have to order the entire transfer valve assembly, something to the tune of $300 if I recall.

I'd check the diagrams for part numbers but I'm lazy. Someone else do it. xP

Re: front wheels losing traction

The part number for the one I got is 31942AA061. It is the solenoid and valve assembly. List price on it was $102 and I got it for $81 through my shop. I also got 2 of gasket part# 31954AA071, although when I took the valve out. The car is all back together, and I'm putting fluid back in it now, so hopefully that will actually fix the problem. It wasn't bad at all actually. The hardest part was getting the driver's side O2 sensor plugged back in cause I couldn't get my hand up there between the exhaust, the axle, and the steering rack. I also found out my trans mount is broken, so I'll have to drop the exhaust and fix that another time.

Re: front wheels losing traction

Well I don't think that fixed the problem. The car does feel like its grabbing the road a little better around turns, and it seems like the torque steer isn't as bad as it was, but I can still break the front tires loose, and even when I don't break them loose, it still has torque steer driving me nuts. I'll have to put it up on a lift again to see if the rear wheels are turning now, but I suspect that they won't be, and the minor improvements I felt are probably just all in my head. Any other ideas what it could be?

Oh uh, I guess having the C sol go out can wear the shyte out of the transfer clutch.
We're getting kind of rusty at this.

Re: front wheels losing traction

So what's that mean? Tranny rebuild? Cause if that's the case, then I'll use this as my excuse to swap a 5-speed into it.

I'll wait for someone else to chime in on the problem, but as a 5 spd owner I will say in hindsight I would have been more happy with a 4.11 auto, so think hard about how bad you want a stick.
'Course on the flipside, the stick is what's saving my ass in the snow right now. I have no ABS or snow tires.

Re: front wheels losing traction

The transfer clutch is a seperate deal from the tranny. You can get it replaced for less than your left nut.

Re: front wheels losing traction

Ok, so where exactly is it, and what needs to come out to replace it? And I would hope that I can replace it for less than my left nut. I've never had to replace it before, but I imagine that replacing my left nut would be a very painful and costly procedure!

Re: front wheels losing traction

The t-clutch is probably sheared off at the basket. I've seen that happen quite a few times. You will need to take the tail housing off again and you can remove it from there. I think we may have a good set on the shelf.
