Recall installed "spin on trans filter"

What size is the filter Subaru did not have any info on it for me when i asked, just the P/N for the kit.

Specs for the filter (so i can just go get a spin on from the parts store) would be appreciated too! I want to change it ASAP and drain and refill the trans.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Make sure that the filter that you use is for an auto trans.

Don't use an engine oil filter, they are too restrictive for the low pressure flow in the auto cooler circuit. They will reduce the flow.

Harvey.

Re: Recall installed "spin on trans filter"

Ya, no, I meant a spin on trans filter. Anyone know what size filter fits the recall filter kit uses?

If you're talking about what folks call the "campaign" filter that was fitted on 92s, it's not a spin-on unit; rather, it looks much like the fuel filter and connects by way of a strap mount. I don't know if the mounting bracket is still available from Subaru, but if you come up with one you can search here and find the part number for a Legacy filter kit that costs (as I recall) about $12. and comes with a length of ATF hose and protective rubber sheath.

Re: Recall installed "spin on trans filter"

Ah, THANK YOU! I hadn't personaly looked at it yet as it's pretty cold out lol and it has been raining. I thought it looked like a spin on in the picture.

Thanks for clearing that up! I assume there is no problem using that location and those lines for installing a spin on mount.

Thanks a LOT!

Mike

Re: Recall installed "spin on trans filter"

Yeah, you should be able to get the retrofit kit from Subaru still...

On a side note, those of you with newer cars with the spin on filter, DO NOT use an aftermarket filter, they leak, and don't filter as well. (Subaru says you don't ever have to change the filter, most of the ones I do are ones that Goofy Lube has either replaced with an inferior filter, or has tried to take off and boogered up in the process...)
